Florida Communications Unit The Florida Communications Unit - Field Support to Incident Communications ESF2 in the Sunshine State

Terms of use: www.flcomu.com/terms

The Florida Communications Unit was established after the 2016 hurricane season, to support the State of Florida Emergency Support Function 2 (ESF2). We provide field incident communications support for planned and unplanned incidents, under the Information and Communications Technology Branch (ICT). In addition we support exercises, planning, preparedness and training activities throughout Florid

a and beyond to enhance and evolve interoperable communications. Numerous agencies, professional and select volunteer resources across Florida serve as part of the communications unit, who are qualified or seeing qualification under the ICT branch position descriptions. Resources have deployed on major incidents annually as approved by Florida's SWIC:

COMC - COML - COMT - INCM - RADO - INDT - THSP - AUXCOMM - ITSL - ESF2

Florida’s Central Region (5) communications unit staff attended the annual statewide incident management team (IMT) summit recently with our SWIC. Team members from Florida's 7 IMT's networked, attended training, heard from FDEM leadership on plans and training for the 2026 season, and participated in a tabletop exercise.

An equipment cache display familiarized personnel with available resources. Many communications unit personnel in Florida are cross-rostered on these regional IMT’s for flexibility which is key in disaster scenarios.

AUXCOMM Forum- David Byrum and SWIC Roger Lord facilitated the annual stakeholder forum today in Orlando in partnership with Hamcation.

Arc Thames, our region 1/2 coordinator received the 2nd annual AUXCOMM volunteer of of the year award. Arc’s efforts statewide and within his regions in North Florida are a model for other volunteers serving the citizens and visitors to our state in times of need. Congratulations!

We were privileged to have former FEMA administrator, Craig Fugate to address the forum attendees on the importance of amateur radio’s role in communications resilience.

INTD Training- Last week Santa Rosa County hosted a combined region 1 and 2 incident tactical dispatcher course.

PST’s from Panhandle agencies attended adding to Florida’s roster of tactical dispatch personnel to become qualified for future support and response needs.

A special thanks to Ocean City-Wright Fire Control District and our friend Roman at JPS for stopping by and demonstrating your capabilities. Future INTD classes are now being planned for region 6 and 3.

🎤Central States Shoutout 🎤

Our friends at Central States Communications Association are wrapping up their week long Red River Bootcamp this evening in Oklahoma.

Trainees from the Midwest states learned from some of the “best in the business” during the incident command position training sessions (COML, COMT, INTD, ITSL and AUXCOMM) over the last few days and they topped it off with a field deployment exercise today.

Great job y’all!

With the tropics keeping things away from the sunshine state (so far!) the AUXC training team had a chance to fit in a rare in-season AUXCOMM class in Naples this week.

To the 8 trainees that took time out to attend and for volunteering to use your skills to help your communities and served agencies, we thank you and look forward to your success!

TACTICAL DISPATCH TRAINING- 24 911 telecommunicators came together this week for an incident tactical dispatcher (INTD) training.

The 32 hour program prepares seasoned 911 personnel to work outside the walls of a normal 911 center. Often in these cases dispatchers work with limited or different equipment and with others they may not have worked with prior. Tactical dispatch resources have roles in large planned events, no-warning incidents, as well as during storm season as part of an ICS communications unit strike team or a TERT team that provides staff augmentation to public safety answering points (PSAP).

The 32 hour training consists of classroom work, group activities, equipment familiarization and a full-day field excercise simulating a real world incident.

Additional INTD training will be made available in Florida via the ICT/Communications Unit training program in 2026.

Shout out to the Collier County Sheriff's Office Lake County Sheriff's Office - Florida, Lake County Florida Emergency Management and the Florida Division of Emergency Management for your support this week.

While mother nature is relaxing in Florida (for the time being) we’d like to give a shout out to our friends at TX-COMU.

They’ve been putting in the work on very long days the last several weeks after the tragic Guadalupe River basin flooding incident in the Kerrville region.

We’ve worked with the TX team before on deployment and we know things are in good hands!
