Yesterday was a day of remembrance and of honoring those we lost on September 11th.
But I also want to take a moment to hold space for our Muslim community.
It is hard to ignore some of the comments, posts, and rhetoric that we see around this anniversary.
September 11th was an incredibly sad and painful day in our country’s history, and it is unfortunate that some people choose to use that pain to push hatred or bigotry toward our Muslim neighbors.
I represent an incredibly diverse community, and that is one of the things I love most about it.
We come from different places, different faiths, different cultures, and different experiences. And every single person who calls this community home deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and valued here.
There is no place for Islamophobia in our community. There is room for all of us.
Remembrance should call us toward responsibility to one another, not hatred.
