Remember that time when very few wealthy people controlled our local planners and politicians, and as a result impacted the daily lives of thousands of people, all without demonstrated need? The time is now.

⬇️Link in the comments to more information about the request to annex 1,741 acres of rural land near Carr Lake and Meridian into the City of Tallahassee. The County already rejected this idea last year during the Comp plan process, thus the annexation is a go-around strategy.

The annexation action fundamentally starts the chain reaction of unwanted sprawl, worsening traffic, and wildlife corridor and water resource degradation in this beautiful area by saying yes to development incentives. Make sure to tell the City Commissioners your thoughts.

Glad to see managers taking the opportunity during the ongoing drought to maintain the Rhoden Cove ramp. The giant hole at the end of the concrete that put boat trailers at risk is smoothed, and the veg in the channel and around the observation boardwalk got a haircut to keep it manageable. Now for some summer time rain!?

📌Lake Jackson Mounds — Tallahassee, FL
📍30°30'03.46"N 84°18'41.86"W

One of the largest Fort Walton culture ceremonial centers in Florida, the Lake Jackson Mounds were originally consisting of at least 7 major mounds arranged around plazas, the site flourished between about A.D. 1050–1500 and served as a political and religious capital connected to the broader Mississippian world. The largest mound still rises roughly 36 feet high and measures approximately 300 by 280 feet at its base, while another nearby mound reaches about 27 feet high, still dominatimg the landscape today. Archaeologists have uncovered elite burials, copper artifacts, shell ornaments, and ceremonial pottery, revealing extensive trade and social connections across the Southeast. Today, LiDAR cuts through the forest canopy to expose the enduring outlines of these massive earthworks and the powerful society that built them. The surviving earthworks preserve the imprint of centuries of labor, ceremony, leadership, and community—allowing the landscape itself to continue telling the story of one of prehistoric Florida’s most significant Native American capitals.

Jackson these late spring days.

The basin received just over 2” of rain this weekend (woohoo!), falling slow and moderate. As a result, the rain didn’t touch the overall deficit in the lake but it did bring much needed rain (and oxygen!) to the remaining water, plants, and wildlife. Chances of more rain are looking good as we currently move into El Niño and wetter weather patterns!
