Today, June 1, marks the start of the 2026 hurricane season. Forecasters with NOAA’s National Weather Service are forecasting the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season will bring 8-14 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 3-6 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1-3 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 111 mph or higher).

To stress the importance of whole community preparedness, local leaders gathered today to spotlight community resources and emphasize personal readiness. Watch that event at https://youtu.be/84u0CPNET2w.

To help guide residents through planning, the City provides its Step-by-Step PREP guide online at https://bit.ly/4o4dSZM.

Follow along all week (and throughout the season) as we share tips and resources that can help you plan, prepare and - should a storm come - recover safely.

We are excited to announce the details for this year’s Food Advocate Program!

Starting June 17th, program participants will meet every Wednesday from 6pm-8pm to engage in meaningful lectures and hands-on training with local food experts to learn more about how we, as community members, can advance food accessibility in our neighborhoods.

Over 12 weeks, these meetings will cover the basics of nutrition, food systems, advocacy, and leadership, with a focus on practical applications in the greater Tallahassee area, ultimately concluding in a six-month mentorship and sponsored community project.

If you or someone you know are interested in making a meaningful contribution to your own education and your community, you can apply now: thrivetlh.org/foodadvocate.
