A lovely tribute by Jack Carson:
Folks – today marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the little free library located at Auburn & Elm Aves. Over the past decade thousands of books, Washington Post newspapers, and scores of magazines, candy, doggie treats, toys, trinkets, sidewalk chalk, movie DVDs, music CDs, puzzles, and stuffed animals have been “checked out.”
The serene location has served as the venue for poetry readings, wedding day photographs, informal neighbor hood gatherings, and untold numbers of folks who just wanted to chill out for awhile. I
t has been my honor and privilege to serve as the library steward. I like to think that the library has added to the quality of life in the neighborhood and in some small way has contributed to the literacy of the residents.
Many thanks to the Friends of the Takoma Park MD Library for sponsoring the little free library program in the city and a very special shout out to Walter Mulbry for installing the library and for his diligence in maintaining its structural integrity over the years.
And a big “thank you” to those of you who have made donations to the library. Onward ....
