Community Vision for Takoma

Community Vision for Takoma Community first! We follow City government and politics closely, and advocate on City issues.
(1)

Neighbors advocating for city government transparency and accountability, environmental responsibility, supporting small businesses, racial equity and diversity, preserving rent stabilization, resisting displacement. An informal network of Takoma residents and nearby neighbors dedicated to Takoma Park’s progressive legacy and leadership, working to strengthen the transparency, accountability, and

responsiveness of local government. Those issues have included preserving and expanding our affordable housing, protecting our City’s rent stabilization ordinance, maintaining our diversity, commitment to racial equity, preventing displacement and gentrification, engagement across socioeconomic and racial differences, public land use for the public good, living in harmony with the environment, addressing climate change, and City budget issues.

UPDATE: Tonight's hearing is POSTPONED due to storms. Stay tuned for a rescheduled date.

The only public hearing on the plan to double the City Council term lengths from two years to four years will be held next MONDAY night at 6:30pm. Two days later, City Council plans to vote on a resolution to change the City Charter to double term lengths. This will go into effect unless residents gather thousands of petition signatures to get a referendum on this issue onto the ballot. So turn out Monday night to weigh in.

Our city's historic rent stabilization law, which helps keep rents affordable, is now being reviewed by City Council.
Unfortunately, the review process opens the door to weakening the law for renters. Sign this petition to urge the Council to continue to prioritize tenant rights, and continue to limit allowable annual rent increases to no more than the rate of inflation. (Link to petition in comments).

Tonight, the City Council begins reviewing our rent stabilization law. Please show up or tune in, and prepare to defend against any weakening of the law that has made us such a diverse, welcoming, and resilient community. CVT has prepared a NEW Q&A on rent stabilization as background. Link in first comment.

Last night, the City announced that the police officer who allegedly sexually harassed a police dispatcher no longer works for the City. This follows sustained public outcry about the case, its handling by the City, and the fact that the alleged perpetrator was still on our police staff. Thank you to all who spoke out. Call Senator Will Smith NOW and urge him to pass a clean "Good Cause" bill, rather than forcing a choice between rent stabilization and just cause eviction.

Both CVT and the City have weighed in supporting state legislation currently under consideration that would authorize counties to pass laws protecting renters from being evicted from their homes without a good reason (the “Good Cause Eviction” bill). But "poison pill" amendments would force an unnecessary choice between rent stabilization and good cause eviction.

Call Senator Smith's office NOW to comment on SB 651, at 410-841-3634.
