The Roadless Rule is at risk.

For more than 20 years, the Roadless Rule has protected millions of acres of national forests and grasslands, including important landscapes throughout the Sierra Nevada.

A new proposal would rescind those protections, potentially opening currently protected areas to new road construction and development.

The public comment period is now open through September 21, giving all of us an opportunity to make our voices heard.

If protecting our forests, clean water, wildlife habitat, and the wild places that make the Sierra so special matters to you, now is the time to speak up.

Restoring Meeks Creek Meadow. 🌱

The Washoe Tribe is leading important restoration work at Meeks Creek Meadow on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore.

The project aims to restore meadow health, reduce fuel loads, reintroduce culturally significant plants, and support traditional ecological practices, including prescribed fire.

The work is helping restore an important landscape while supporting the Washoe Tribe’s longstanding connection to and stewardship of the land.

We’ll continue to follow the project as restoration moves forward.

Golden Mussels Are Moving Closer to Lake Tahoe

Golden mussels have recently been detected in California, raising concerns for lakes and waterways across the state.

Like other invasive mussels, they can spread quickly, damage infrastructure, disrupt native ecosystems, and are extremely difficult to remove once established.

The good news? Prevention works.

Whether you’re launching at Obexer’s or anywhere else around the lake, taking a few extra minutes to Clean. Drain. Dry. your boat and gear helps protect Lake Tahoe for everyone.

Sometimes conservation looks like protecting forests.

Sometimes it looks like protecting a tiny gnome village. 🍄

Hidden along Blackwood Creek, this community-created trail surprise has become a favorite for hikers of all ages.

If you stop by, remember to tread lightly, stay on the trail, and leave it just as magical for the next person who discovers it.

FOWS has concerns about the proposed project at 8311 Meeks Bay Ave. and believes it deserves a thorough review to ensure it meets TRPA’s scenic standards and protects the character of Meeks Bay Point.

If you share these concerns, we encourage you to submit a letter to TRPA as part of the public review process. Every thoughtful comment helps ensure community voices are part of the conversation.

The Homewood Mountain Resort proposal continues to move through the review process.

Homewood has applied to modify its Master Plan permit to allow building fire department approvals through Placer County Fire rather than the North Tahoe Fire Protection District. FOWS believes the commitments made to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District as part of the original approvals should remain in place before construction moves forward.

County staff are currently reviewing the application. Once it is deemed complete, it will be considered by the North Tahoe Regional Advisory Committee (NTRAC) and the Placer County Planning Commission.
