Homes for Cherokee Kids - Indian Child Welfare ᏣᎳᎩᎯ ᎠᏰᎵ ᎠᏂᏴᏫᏯ ᏗᏂᏲᏟ ᏗᏂᏍᏕᎵᏍᎩ Cherokee Nation Indian Child Welfare (ICW) There is no resource more vital to the continual existence and integrity of Indian tribes that their children.

The Cherokee Nation Indian Child Welfare Department is made up of 10 units focused on protecting Cherokee children and famillies. In 1978, Congress found that an alarmingly high percentage of Indian families are broken up by the removal, often unwarranted, of their
children by non tribal public and private agencies and that an alarmingly high percentage of these children are placed in non-Indian

foster and adoptive homes. The States, exercising their jurisdiction over Indian child custody proceedings through administrative and judicial bodies, have often failed to recognize the essential tribal relations of Indian people and the cultural and social standards prevailing in Indian communities and families. In 1978, the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in order to protect the best interest of Indian children and promote the stability and security of Indian tribes. The ICWA provides placement preferences when placing Indian children in foster care placement, pre adoptive placement and adoptive placement. Cherokee Nation follows the placement preferences of the ICWA as follows: 1-relative placement, placement with a Cherokee Nation tribal member, placement with a tribal member of another federally recognized tribe. These placements can be made once the family is a certified home. Cherokee Nation ICW adheres to these placement preferences and diligently attempts to provide ICWA compliant placements for Cherokee children. This page is designed as an information page regarding the the Cherokee Nation ICW department. ICW actively recruits, trains and certifies Native American families to meet the needs of Cherokee children for foster and adoptive placement. Interested families will find an array of answers and information regarding Cherokee Nation ICW recruitment and certification process. Inquiries on potentially becoming a Cherokee Nation foster or adoptive home can be made by contacting Cherokee Nation ICW by phone, or email. Our children are the heart of our Nation, they are the hope and the future. Everything we do to protect the heart, ensures the continued existence of our Nation. Our children are valued and respected. Our children deserve nurturing homes environments where they can keep their culture strong. We invite your family to join our team. We need you to work together with us for the interest of our children.

Our need for foster homes is great. The need of foster homes for teens is greater. Cherokee teens in foster care deserve connection, culture, and a place to belong. Fostering isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence, listening, supporting, honoring their identity.

One choice - one commitment - a lifetime impact.

Our Children, Our Future

We are urgently seeking tribal foster homes for older children and teens in our communities. While many people often think of fostering babies or young children, our older youth need you too.

💙 They deserve a safe place where they feel connected to culture, family, and tradition.
💙 They need strong role models to help guide them into adulthood.
💙 They need us—our communities, our tribe—to step forward.

If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the time. Opening your home to an older child is an act of love that can change a life forever.

✨ Training, support, and resources are available.

If you or someone you know would like more information about becoming a foster parent, please contact us at 918-458-6900 or direct message us here.
