The Sheriff of Cherokee County, Jason Chennault, is the chief law enforcement officer of the county and is responsible for providing law enforcement services for the unincorporated areas of the county, an area of over 740 square miles.

On the evening of Tuesday August 18, 2026, CCSO deputies and deputy marshals of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service responded to the Welling area of Cherokee County to a 911 report of repeated screaming being heard in a wooded area.

Upon arriving, deputies and deputy marshals spoke with several residents in the area and were given an area to focus their search. A wooded area was searched and deputies and deputy marshals found nobody screaming. A drone was brought to the scene and flown in hopes of covering and searching the area more thoroughly. As the drone was being flown, somebody in the area fired 5-6 r***e shots at CCSO deputies and CNMS deputy marshals. The r***e bullet strikes came as close as two feet to the deputies and deputy marshals. Additional law enforcement officers responded to the area and after searching for several hours, the shooting suspect was not located.

In the days that followed, sufficient probable cause was established to request a felony arrest warrant for 41-year-old IAN ALEXANDER BOWLINE for shooting at CCSO deputies and CNMS deputy marshals on the evening of August 18, 2026. BOWLINE is a resident of the area deputies were called to that evening and is a convicted felon. A search warrant for BOWLINE’s residence was also obtained.

On Tuesday August 18, 2026, IAN ALEXANDER BOWLINE was arrested at his residence, less than 200 yards from the area the r***e shots struck near CCSO deputies and CNMS deputy marshals on the evening of August 18. Upon executing the search warrant for BOWLINE’s residence, seven r***es, five sh****ns, three handguns and several thousand rounds of fi***rm am******on were seized.

BOWLINE was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center and will either be prosecuted by the State of Oklahoma or Federal prosecutors since he is a previously convicted felon.

At around 2:30 am on the morning of Saturday June 13, 2026, the Cherokee County 911 Center received a 911 report of a stabbing with multiple victims at a resort on the Illinois River northeast of Tahlequah on State Highway 10.

Deputies of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, deputy marshals of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service, officers from the Grand River Dam Authority Police Department, firefighters from the Illinois River Fire Department and medics from Northeastern Health Systems-Tahlequah and Cherokee Nation Emergency Medical Service responded to the resort and found four people, two males and two females, had been stabbed with varying degrees of injuries. The injured victims were treated on scene, stabilized and transported by ground and air ambulances to Tulsa and Fayetteville, Arkansas area hospitals. Two suspects, 40-year-old DOMINIC HERNANDEZ and 42-year-old JESSICA MURGUIA (both of residents of the Tulsa area) were arrested at the scene and transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center in Tahlequah where they were both booked for four counts of the felony crime of ASSAULT and BATTERY WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

All four victims are reported to be in stable condition.

This incident is still an active investigation by investigators of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and more details may be released at a later date.

We had A LOT of rain come through last night. After several water rescues and running around for trees and other debris in the road calls, it's settled down a little for CCSO. Our County Commissioners' crews, fire departments and crews from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation are out and about doing clean up and repairs. Please be patient and polite, they'll get everything back to normal as soon as they can.

During Monday morning’s Cherokee County Commissioners’ meeting, the commissioners signed a proclamation making May 3-May 9 Oklahoma Home and Community Education Week. Oklahoma Home & Community Education (OHCE) is a statewide organization with members in local communities across all 77 counties. Dedicated to lifelong learning and community service, OHCE empowers individuals by teaching valuable skills that enhance daily life. Through friendship, support, and shared knowledge, members work together to make a meaningful impact on their communities. Cherokee County’s OHCE group is called “Aprons and Lace”.

This morning some OHCE Aprons and Lace members dropped off several boxes of sugary goodness to CCSO. THANK YOU!, Aprons and Lace, for thinking of us.
