Today’s structure fire turned into a little more than just putting out a fire.

During the response, crews learned there were animals still inside the home. Crews were able to locate and safely remove 11 dogs and 1 cat from the structure.

This incident is also a good reminder of the importance of closing doors when you leave a room or evacuate during a fire. A closed door can slow the spread of fire, heat, and smoke, giving occupants more time to get out and giving firefighters a better chance to contain the fire.

Thankfully, all 12 animals were safely removed and reunited with their owners.

If there’s a fire, get out, call 911 and close doors behind you if you can do so safely.

The Tahlequah Firefighters would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Northeastern State University Athletics for allowing us to host the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Doc Wadley Stadium year after year. We are incredibly grateful for your continued support and partnership in helping us honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We would also like to recognize the Riverhawk Company Army ROTC for being such great partners and for helping coordinate the 9/11 Ceremony & Stair Climb with us each year. Your dedication and commitment to this event mean so much to our Fire Department and our community.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came out and participated in this year’s stair climb as we marked the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001. Your presence, support, and willingness to climb in honor and remembrance help ensure that the stories and sacrifices of that day are never forgotten.

A special thank you to matt.lee_photography and Shutter Up Photos by Josh for volunteering your time and talents to capture the moments of this year’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. 📸

Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember all the lives lost that day and on the days, weeks, months, & years that followed, the courageous first responders who answered the call, the military members who served in the years that followed, and the families and communities forever changed by that day.

We will NEVER FORGET. 🇺🇸
