In recognition of the Fishing Wars, families and friends gathered at x̌ʷiqʷadiʔalʔtxʷ (Thunderbird House) to honor the past and partake in a memorial dinner Sept. 9.

For generations, fishing has been a way of life, and this gathering served as a way to remember the struggles that were overcome and teach the importance of exercising treaty rights.

Elders and community members were welcomed to share stories of their experiences throughout the evening alongside a viewing of the documentary film "As Long As The Rivers Run" following the meal.

The 47th Annual Labor Day Powwow took place Sept. 4-6.

This annual event brings relatives from all over to celebrate, sing and dance together in the way we have always done.

Our hands are raised to those who helped make the event possible, participated and those who witnessed the beautiful traditional practice.

Drummers, singers, dancers and spectators packed the powwow tent last weekend during the Puyallup Tribe's annual Labor Day Powwow, with hundreds of community members sharing in the celebration of Tribal culture.

Each day featured a variety of competition styles with dancers from all ages, along with outgoing royalty specials by Senior Warrior Che-Ortiz Conway, Senior Princess Znya Berys and Junior Princess Valentina Carrillo.

This year's incoming royalty are Senior Princess Naiyeli Cruz-Garcia, Junior Princess Charline Big Lake, Senior Warrior Shikoba Cruz-Garcia and Junior Warrior Victor Perez-Ramirez.
