Olentangy Alpines

Olentangy Alpines Indian braves would use the riverbank, red silica clay as their war paint. Thank you for your interest in my herd of American Alpines.

OLENTANGY is an Algonquin Indian name meaning 'River of Red Face Paint' and a river valley that flows through central Ohio & The Ohio State University main campus, my Alma Mater. I have been selectively breeding Olentangy dairy goats for the past twenty years, and prior to that under the prefix, M&M ACRES. My mother purchased my first ADGA registered goat in 1982 and every doe in the herd descends

from that first 4-H kid. My first herd name, M&M Acres translated as “Mom & Me” or “Margaret & Mark”...those were fun days. The herd name changed in 1992 when I obtained my ADGA judges license to the current prefix. OLENTANGY is an Algonquin Indian name meaning 'River of Red Face Paint'. The Olentangy river flows through central Ohio and The Ohio State University, where I am a proud alumnus. My current herd consists of 25 American Alpines and 2 Purebred LaManchas. The herd relocated 2,400 miles from Northwest Ohio to Western Washington in April 2001 where our new home has the beautiful backdrop of Mt. Rainier, the iconic image of the state.

TABINI has had a good show season so far being 4x 1st & 1x 2nd (to AVRIL) and is milking well on her second lactation, earning her *M award on ODMC at the Spring Fair last month. I’ve retained 7 doe kids, and if I don’t want my herd size to increase that means 7 adults need to move on…so far I’ve only sold 3 so I’ve got to get serious about parting with does I’d rather not…

She settles AI (she had triplets bred AI in early March), her udder is even & has had no mastitis. She has an excellent disposition, comes when called by name “BEAN” and she has excellent substance of bone, is a B1G doe and has crazy, tight toed feet…not to mention her cute, string-bean wattles! She has 2 championship legs, just needing 1 more unrestricted leg to finish her champion title.

FOR SALE, serious inquiries only. Transportation to the ADGA National Show is NOT an option.

TARA is milking very well this year, and at shows, perhaps too well because she was totally over uddered in ring #2 on Saturday (my fault for opting to make a mess & not relieve her ringside) which made an easy Best of Breed win for CHIPENGALI in that ring. Juggling 3-ring shows with multiple milkers by yourself is constant work & I thought I could keep up with just 5 milkers. That often results in being unsocial with other exhibitors & show staff & I’m trying to not be so tunnel visioned at the shows so that people have less negative opinions as a result. Nonetheless, TARA has a beautiful mammary system and I’ll try for some better photos later in the year where she isn’t so uncomfortable.

ION has won a rosette each ring shown this year too (5X), she just needs to win one more big one! In the meantime I’ll be feeding her everything I can think of to try to deepen her out more by the end of summer! She is a paternal half sister to CHIPENGALI as well. Uncle Livingston gets a lot of attention across the country but CRAFTY is no slouch for a littermate brother…semen available.

VIV has won a rosette everytime she has been shown this year (5X) as a first freshening two year-old. Her mammary system is a beautiful thing to look at from every angle & demonstrates her sire’s ability to improve all mammary traits especially as an outcross if you need some udder structural improvements. CHIMAY semen is available.

I had a fun day of showing just a handful of does on Saturday and they all did extremely well for their first clipping of the year. A proud accomplishment was achieved that I’m not sure I’ve ever heard has been done before…when CHIPENGALI finished in ring #2, that made her a TENTH (10), consecutive-generation permanent champion, all bred & owned by myself. Maybe there are others out there, so speak up if you’ve got one too!

I had no plans to keep a May kid, but when she freshened, I figured I needed to hang onto her daughter to potentially become an 11th generation...now to finish the "powers of 10" goal(s) and see if she can be a 10th generation to appraise 90 or higher, but that can't happen until 2027 because she's only a first freshener this year.

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Last airport run of the year for this Buckeye returning to the fatherland. I’m sold out of 2026 kids and will update the website with tentative next year’s breeding plans after returning home from judging the national show next month.

A reminder to anyone still considering adding new genetics still in 2026 that a majority of the nation’s airports undergo live animal embargoes starting June 1 regardless if the destination is 85 degrees or less. If you have your eye on a new buck or doe kid somewhere & don’t want to have to worry about days of communal travel in a trailer, you have 11 days to get your air freight shipment organized…or just save up & get a kid from me next year! I only used 5 straws of semen last fall & that settled over 50% of my herd. I have a huge tank full of quality semen & plan to use as much of it as I can to let those great genetics live once again…there will be extra kids, so why not plan on adding one to your breeding program?

If only we really could teleport!?!?!! Fresh off the excitement of last week’s Best of the West online auction, TELEPORTER is on his way south. Thank you again to all the bidders & interested Alpine breeders. Something to keep in mind for the future, when you see genetics that you really want to incorporate into your program, don’t assume you’ll be able to purchase semen (later) instead of the task of being the winning bidder…international dairy goat breeders are bidding too and willing to go the distance to bring those genetics to their country.

I have one remaining doe kid available and some late buck kids…but the buck kids will all be leaving Saturday morning unless you reach out today.

2026 kidding season is a wrap! The last two, first fresheners (CHIPENGALI pictured & TELLUROUS) kidded on Monday afternoon, both with outstanding mammary systems….but with 3 buck kids! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have one doe kid available born 4/26, sundgau color (Tempo Aquila Standing Prestige x Olentangy Jive Blue Chip). Air freight shipping is still possible, many destinations start their live animal embargo on June 1, and it’s getting warmer nearly everywhere making it challenging, but not impossible.

I only took 2 does to the show on Saturday so I didn’t need to bring my trailer & RET needs some show ring training for the future (yearling mentality). RET has a fun pedigree combining some great, influential sires I’ve used via AI in past years.

If you don’t have a tank or are not yet utilizing AI in your breeding program, that’s ok, you can reserve a 2027 kid from me and get one that way!

ION made her ‘26 show ring debut today at just under 3 weeks fresh. While she hasn’t put on that show “bloom” yet, she shows good development over last year and the fore udder extension is 🙌🏻

It’s rare, nearly impossible to exhibit at an ADGA show & be able to drive home & be unloaded before evening chores…so I celebrated by going out to eat! Thank you to my awesome show neighbors for another great day away from home. ❤️
