Mattye Berry-Evans’ philosophy is simple: “Community is strength. Community is power.”

She lives those words every day as a community-based worker (CBW) for Serving Our Community, a BIPOC women-led organization founded by longtime Pierce County community leaders.

Serving Our Community is a partner of , Elevate Health’s community care hub that supports the vital work carried out by CBWs and improves local health and wellness outcomes through community-based care coordination.

Berry-Evans believes basic needs like affordable housing and access to nutritional food are human rights. As a CBW, she strives to connect clients with services that can assist with both.

“Without housing, you have no stability,” Berry-Evans says. “And people have got to have nourishment.”

“I work with people all over Pierce County,” she continues. “Whatever the person feels they need — I want to support them.”

When Tacoma Community House moved into a new headquarters, they saw an opportunity to invest in long-term sustainability through solar energy. The challenges were timing and upfront cost.

One Pierce, Elevate Health’s social impact fund, partnered with Tacoma Community House on a bridge loan. By providing short-term financing, One Pierce allowed Tacoma Community House to move forward quickly with their solar installation without disrupting their ability to deliver critical programs and services.

Today, the building is covered in solar panels, reducing Tacoma Community House’s energy costs by about 70% and freeing up more resources for the people they serve.
