What are the benefits of the Ground Lease Model? When you are a Habitat Homeowner, you pay lower property taxes than if you were to buy a home on the open market. Because Habitat owns the land, the Habitat Homeowner is only paying property taxes on their house. 🏡

We are so excited! Our CEO, Sherrana Kildun, will be speaking about Affordable Housing Options through Shared-Equity Ownership at the National Community Reinvestment Coalition Summit on September 22!

The summit will bring together advocates, lenders, developers, philanthropy, public sector, nonprofit leaders and community development practitioners for practical conversations grounded in what people and organizations are experiencing across the state.

Meet Aging in Place client Sharifa! She is 73 years old and reached out to Tacoma Habitat’s Aging in Place program with a request to add handrails to her front steps.

“I am disabled and use a walker and cane. My front stairs are missing a handrail, which makes it difficult for me to get in and out of the house.”

Her son Hameed, works for 1st Security Bank of Washington which highly encourages employee volunteering, and was able to help our team in the process of adding handrails to her front steps. This made the project even more special and meaningful. Sharifa can now safely get in and out of her house without the risk of falling.

We were so honored to have Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland visit one of our renovation sites. Back in April 2026, Strickland secured $850k for affordable housing in Tacoma and continues to champion initiatives to fund and support affordable housing in the state of Washington. We are proud to have Congresswomen like Marilyn who help open the door to stability, hope, and possibility for future generations.

When partnering with Habitat, Habitat Homeowners enter into the Ground Lease Agreement, which keeps the annual equity at 1.5%. This ensures that the Homeowner is still able to build equity, but if/when the home is sold on the open market, it remains affordable for other income-qualified buyers.
