I am deeply disappointed by yet another federal action targeting higher education and the programs our colleges and universities use to support students.

The Trump administration’s proposed IRS rule threatens the tax-exempt status of private educational institutions over policies and programs it considers discriminatory, including in areas such as admissions, scholarships and financial aid.

As chair of the Senate Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee, I believe our focus should be on opening doors for students — not creating uncertainty for the institutions working to serve them.

This comes amid persistent federal attacks on higher education, financial aid, and efforts to make college more accessible. I will continue standing with Washington students and institutions and defending our commitment to an education system where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

As students across Washington head back to school, please remember to slow down, stay alert, and know when to stop for school buses. 🚌📚

According to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), Washington school bus drivers reported 960 instances of drivers illegally passing stopped buses in just one day. With nearly 341,000 students relying on school buses each day last school year, we all have a responsibility to help keep students safe on their way to and from the classroom.

As vice chair of the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee and a member of the Senate Transportation Committee, student safety is always a priority for me.

Give buses space, watch carefully for students crossing the road, and when those red lights are flashing, know when to stop. A little patience can make all the difference. 💛

Welcome to a new school year! 📚

Students, I hope you begin this year ready to learn, open to new experiences and confident that you belong. Ask questions, make a new friend and please reach out when you need help. You do not have to navigate every challenge alone.

While we ask students to arrive ready to learn, we must make sure our schools are ready to support them. That responsibility guides my work as vice chair of the Senate Early Learning & K–12 Education Committee and chair of the Senate Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee.

I wrote a letter to students and families about that commitment and my hopes for the year ahead.

The right to vote is fundamental, and Washington has worked hard to build an election system that is secure, accessible, and trusted by voters. 🗳️

I stand with WA Secretary of State Steve Hobbs as he works to protect our state’s vote-by-mail system and ensure Washingtonians can continue participating in our democracy with confidence.

Protecting our elections means supporting the dedicated state and local election workers who administer them, defending access to the ballot, and making sure every eligible voter has the opportunity to make their voice heard.

I’m grateful for Secretary Hobbs’ leadership and will continue supporting the work to keep Washington’s elections safe, secure, and accessible in the state Senate.

Always a great time at Cheney Stadium, especially when we get to Paint the Park Purple! 💜⚾️

I loved joining fellow Huskies and community members to celebrate UW Tacoma while supporting scholarships that help more students pursue their education. Events like this are a fun reminder of how deeply our colleges and universities are connected to the communities they serve.

And it was wonderful to catch up with former Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards!

The beginning of a new school year should be filled with excitement and possibility, but I know it can also bring additional costs and stress for families. 🎒

Students are better able to focus on learning when they have the supplies, meals, healthcare and support they need. As vice chair of the Senate Early Learning & K–12 Education Committee, I am working to remove barriers for students through the policies and investments we advance in Olympia.

I was honored to spend time with community leaders, including City of DuPont Mayor Ronald J. Frederick and members of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians Tribal Council at this year's Canoe Journey celebration in DuPont. 🫶🏾

A special thank you to Mayor Frederick for the warm welcome — and for the memorable ATV ride! It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, share conversations, and celebrate alongside the community.

Canoe Journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring Tribal traditions, strengthening relationships, and celebrating the cultures that have shaped this region since time immemorial.
