Celebrating 100 Years of Service

As we prepare to celebrate the accomplishments and history of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department throughout the month of October, we are honored to share the story of how our department came to be what it is today.

For 100 years, the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department has proudly served and protected the Hinsdale Fire District and surrounding fire districts. Throughout those 100 years, generations of dedicated volunteers have answered the call, responded when their neighbors needed help, and worked tirelessly to protect lives, homes, businesses, and our community.

This milestone is more than just a celebration of 100 years—it is a celebration of the volunteers, families, community members, and supporters who have helped make our department what it is today.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to the Hinsdale community and surrounding communities for your continuous support of our department. Your generosity, encouragement, and confidence in our volunteers have allowed us to continue our mission year after year.

This year is especially meaningful as both the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Ladies Auxiliary celebrate 100 years of service. Together, these organizations have played an important role in the history, strength, and success of our fire department and community.

As we celebrate this incredible milestone, we invite you to look back with us at where we started, remember those who served before us, recognize those serving today, and look forward to the future of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department.

100 years of service.
100 years of dedication.
100 years of protecting our community.

From all of us at the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary, thank you for 100 years of support. We are proud to serve you.

At 13:29 hours, the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department and mutual aid from the Lyncourt Fire Department were alerted for an appliance fire on Roxboro Circle.

Hinsdale Engine 8 officer Chief Jones arrived first on scene and reported nothing showing from three sides of the structure. Followed by Tanker Pumper 6 with officer Firefighter Juskow.

After crews investigated and confirmed the fire was out, command was scaled back and held with the Hinsdale engine and Tanker Pumper 6.

As we prepare to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we pause to remember the 343 firefighters, EMS providers, and police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to one of the most devastating attacks on our country.

On September 11, 2001, we remember their courage, their dedication, and their willingness to run toward danger when others were running away.

Please keep the families, friends, coworkers, and loved ones of those who were lost in your thoughts and prayers. We also remember all those who served, responded, and continue to carry the physical and emotional scars of that tragic day.

Never forget the 343. Never forget September 11, 2001. 🇺🇸

May we always honor their sacrifice and the lives they gave in service to others.

🚒 Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department — Motor Vehicle Accident Training

Over the last three weeks, the members of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department have been working on many different skills that are used during motor vehicle accident emergencies.

Our first week focused on vehicle stabilization equipment, followed by familiarization with the units that respond to motor vehicle accidents, including Rescue 5 and Tanker Pumper 6.

During tonight’s training, we were fortunate to have a special guest, Mitch Goldberg from JPB Fire Sales & Services, join us. Mitch worked with our newer members and shared valuable ideas and key points to consider during vehicle extrication, specifically when using our battery-operated Holmatro Combi tool. We then finished the evening training with our Amkus hydraulic tools.

Awesome job by all of our members who participated in training over the past three weeks! The Chiefs’ Office is extremely proud of the skills we continue to see our members developing and putting into practice.

🚒 Some of the equipment carried on Rescue 5
A large portion of cribbing
Four different sizes of air bags for lifting
Two rescue jacks capable of raising a vehicle
Two rescue jacks specifically designed for stabilization
One battery-operated Holmatro Combi tool, providing cutting and spreading capabilities for fire and rescue emergencies
Three different sizes of AMKUS hydraulic rams
One small AMKUS hydraulic cutter
One large AMKUS hydraulic cutter
One AMKUS hydraulic spreader

Another valuable feature of our rescue is that Rescue 5 is equipped with a pump and carries 300 gallons of water. This unit was designed by the committee working under Past Chief Robert Culkin.

One of the key considerations in designing the rescue was the need to have a water tank on board due to daytime staffing limitations. This gives our department the ability to have both a rescue unit and an engine capability available when needed.

The training doesn’t stop here. In a couple of weeks, our members will participate in a full-scale motor vehicle accident scenario. This will give our firefighters a real-life training opportunity to bring everything they have learned over the past several weeks together and put those skills to work during a mock emergency.

Great job to everyone who participated! Training like this helps prepare our members to safely and effectively serve our community when the call comes in. 🚒💪
