Twenty-five years ago today, our nation changed forever.

On September 11, 2001, 2,977 innocent lives were taken in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Among those lost were 343 FDNY firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and 8 emergency medical service personnel who ran directly toward danger without hesitation, answering their final alarm in service to their fellow citizens.

Today, Hancock Field Fire & Emergency Services stands in solemn reflection to honor every innocent civilian, service member, and first responder who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their bravery and devotion to duty remain the benchmark of our calling.

Our duty to remember does not end with that fateful morning. For twenty-five years, first responders, construction trades, and volunteers who answered the call for rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and the Fresh Kills Landfill have endured catastrophic health consequences. Exposure to toxic airborne debris has claimed thousands more lives from 9/11-related illnesses, cancers, and respiratory failure, while many more continue to battle debilitating conditions each day. We honor their continued resilience, remember those lost in the decades since, and reaffirm our commitment to their care.

As New York firefighters and military service members, we carry the torch of remembrance forward. We remember the fallen, we support those still fighting, and we reaffirm our sacred promise:

We will never forget.

On August 27 at 15:45, Engine 14 was requested for mutual aid at the Mattydale Shopping Plaza due to smoke in the building following a power surge. E-14 arrived third due and stretched a line into the affected area. Interior and roof crews searched for the source but found nothing after the power was isolated. Utilities were secured, the structure was ventilated, and crews were soon released by command. It was later determined that the smoke condition was caused by a a rooftop HVAC unit that had been struck by lightning.

Today we had the pleasure of recognizing Firefighter James Wratten for outstanding performance. James had been with us now for nine months. In that time, he has hit the ground running working on his professional development. Recently, James scored a stellar 90% on his Fire Instructor 1 course and a perfect 100% on First Responder Inspector as he works toward IFSAC and Pro Board certification for both of these levels. Job well done!

**Happy 4th of July from Hancock Field Fire & Emergency Services!** 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate the **250th anniversary** of American independence — a milestone that marks a quarter of a millennium since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This special semiquincentennial is a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and freedoms that define our great nation.

**As you celebrate, please keep safety front and center:**

- **Grilling Safety**: Never leave the grill unattended. Keep a fire extinguisher or baking soda nearby. Watch loose clothing near flames.

- **Swimming & Water Safety**: Swim only in designated areas with lifeguards. Never swim alone — especially after drinking. Closely supervise children.

- **Responsible Drinking**: Celebrate responsibly and designate a sober driver. Alcohol and vehicles (or water activities) do **not** mix.

- **Fireworks Safety**: Only use fireworks where legally permitted. Keep water or an extinguisher ready. Never let children handle them. Soak used fireworks in water before disposal.

Stay safe, have fun, and thank you for letting us serve the Hancock Field community. From all of us at **Hancock Field Fire & Emergency Services** — have a happy, healthy, and memorable 4th of July!
