A massive thank you to our incredible community leaders, partners, and supporters who filled this morning’s United Way of CNY State of Caring event with so much passion and dedication to driving change.

📸 Photos are incoming! We’re editing the full gallery right now -- stay tuned throughout the week as we share more highlights, key moments, and familiar faces from this morning’s event.

📈 A few key takeaways from Drive Research’s 2026 State of Caring Report:
- Central New Yorkers remain deeply committed to a variety of critical impact areas. Hunger and food banks lead as the primary focus, with more than two in five residents (42%) prioritizing the issue, followed by children and youth initiatives (33%). Other prominent concerns include homelessness and housing (30%), animal welfare (24%), and mental health (24%).
🍽️ These top five priorities remain consistent with last year’s findings, however, those selecting hunger and food banks increased by 10% (up from 32%).

- Central New Yorkers consistently demonstrate higher levels of nonprofit support and engagement than the rest of the country. In the past 12 months, over half of regional residents (52%) have donated to a nonprofit, significantly outpacing the national figure of 33%.

- Beyond financial contributions, local participation in nonprofit volunteering and advocacy exceeds the rest of the U.S. by 6% and 8%, respectively.

- Donation habits for Central New Yorkers have dipped like last year, with 37% saying they donated less over the past few years.

Happy International Literacy Day! 📚

Today is all about celebrating the power of reading, and what better timing than the first day of school? As local students zipped up their backpacks and headed into new classrooms today, we’re reminded of how vital strong reading skills are for a successful school year.

That’s where United Way's CNY Book Buddies program comes in. By pairing dedicated volunteers with young learners, Book Buddies gives Syracuse City students the 1-on-1 reading support, encouragement, and confidence they need to thrive all year long.

Happy Labor Day, Central New York! 🛠️💙

While many associate today with barbecues and the official end of summer, Labor Day’s true roots lie deep in the labor union movement of the late 19th century. It was created by organized labor to honor the hard work, resilience, and contributions of working people who built the foundation of our communities.

At United Way of Central New York, this day carries special meaning. For decades -- nationally dating back to our formal partnership with the AFL-CIO in 1946 -- United Way and organized labor have walked hand in hand.

Locally, union members across Central New York aren't just the heart of our workforce; they are the heart of our mission. From organizing workplace giving campaigns and volunteering on the ground to sitting on our leadership boards and stepping up during community crises, local union brothers and sisters have continuously shown up to uplift Central New York families.

Today, we honor the legacy of union leaders who fought for fair working conditions, fair wages, and the 8-hour workday. We also thank every single worker across Onondaga County and beyond who keeps our community moving forward every single day.

Office Update: In observance of the holiday, our office is closed today, 9/7/2026. We will reopen tomorrow during regular business hours.
