New Lebanon just became the first town in Columbia County to put teeth behind this fight.

The Town Board passed a resolution, unanimously, barring town resources from being used to expand the Flock database and requiring Town Board approval and a public hearing before any outside agency can host a camera on town infrastructure.

This comes as the county is still sorting out how former Sheriff Don Krapf bought 10 Flock cameras in 2024 using a state grant, a year after the Board of Supervisors tabled the same purchase over concerns about anonymous donor funding. Current Sheriff Salvatore says her office didn't break any rules because she signed a memorandum of understanding instead of a contract, sidestepping the approval process entirely. The County Attorney is now investigating.

Supervisor Tistrya Houghtling says she's sharing New Lebanon's resolution with other town leaders and pushing them to adopt the same rules.

This is exactly the kind of local action we've been asking every town board to take.

One town did it. Seventeen more to go.
