FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYRACUSE, IN – On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at approximately 11:25 p.m., Turkey Creek Fire Territory was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire in the 700 block of East Northshore Drive in Syracuse.
Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions involving a large residential structure. During initial operations, responders also observed a vehicle leaving the scene with active fire noted on the vehicle.
Due to conflicting information received regarding possible occupants inside the residence, firefighters initiated an aggressive fire attack combined with primary search operations.
During interior firefighting operations, a partial structural collapse occurred, resulting in two firefighters becoming temporarily trapped. A mayday was declared, and both firefighters were successfully removed from the structure.
A third firefighter sustained injuries from falling debris while operating outside the residence.
Three firefighters — two from Turkey Creek Fire Territory and one from Tippecanoe Township Fire Territory — were transported for medical evaluation and treatment. All firefighters have since been treated and released.
Due to the complexity of the structure, extensive hidden void spaces, and deteriorating structural conditions, firefighting operations continued into Thursday morning. An excavation crew was utilized to assist crews in safely accessing and extinguishing hot spots.
Mutual aid assistance was provided by Tippecanoe Township Fire Territory, Milford Fire Department, Millersburg-Clinton Fire Territory, Benton Township Fire Department, and numerous supporting public safety agencies.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Turkey Creek Fire Territory would like to thank all responding agencies, dispatch personnel, and neighboring departments for their assistance and professionalism throughout the incident.
