It is my pleasure to announce that Armando Martinez has joined Upstate's Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) as Assistant Director.

For the last 2 years, Armando served as the Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs and CSTEP Advisor within the Division of Student Affairs. In his new role as Assistant Director, Armando will combine his formal training in Public and Community Service and Cultural Foundations of Education coupled with his experience in partnership building and community conversations to advance the mission of the Center for Civic Engagement, which is to promote and support an institutional commitment to active citizenship and social responsibility.

Within his role, Armando will seek to develop sustainable, mutually-beneficial community-based learning experiences that will allow students, faculty and staff to participate in a more engaged university to improve the health of the communities we serve.

The Medical Alumni Foundation is seeking applications from medical students from the Classes of 2022 and 2023 for the Sarah Loguen Fraser, MD, Class of 1876 Scholarship. This year's scholarship award will be $6,400.

This is a very special scholarship recognizing students for their commitment to provide service to the medically under-served. Students who apply must hold similar ideals to Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser, and the recipients will demonstrate leadership qualities and a willingness to give of themselves through volunteer work or other efforts that make a positive impact on the lives of others.

We invite you to apply by sending your CV and a personal statement describing how you have demonstrated the ideals of Sarah Loguen Fraser and how you intend to do so in the future.

Applications are due Friday, June 26, 2020.

The community has been very generous with donations during Upstate’s COVID-19 efforts. We would like to say thank you, by helping those in need during this crisis. Financial donations will help the Food Bank of CNY provide much needed services in our area. Upstate students have provided support to the Upstate community in many ways throughout the pandemic. The students: call inpatients to visit with them and to answer any questions they have about their care, or diagnosis; help to set up telemedicine visits; volunteered for the Upstate COVID 19 Hotline; complete literature searches to obtain the most up-to-date COVID information; organize and volunteer at blood drives; enter data for studies; collect items for the homeless; volunteer to be screeners for college entrances; help to manage a virtual mental health call center; organized food drives; and volunteer in their local communities......Upstate students are AWESOME!! Thank you for all you are doing!!

Community engagement describes a relationship in which we (Upstate students, faculty & staff)) work with communities for the mutually-beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources, in a context of partnership and reciprocity, with the explicit purpose to:

*enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity;
*enhance curriculum, teaching and learning;
*prepare educated, engaged citizens;
*strengthen ethical and civic responsibility;
*address critical societal issues; and
*contribute to the public good.

We believe that this form of engagement leads to impactful learning about social, structural, and systems issues, which can bring about change in our community. When faculty, staff and students join community partners for collaborative and sustained exploration of community-identified needs, with tangible results, everyone benefits. Through service learning, we learn from, with, and about our communities!

America, reeling from twin crises brought on by police brutality and a virus that takes disproportionate aim at people of color, must now reckon with the racism that paved the path for both.

This should be mandatory...however, this dialogue MUST start earlier before the bias and beliefs have an opportunity to become deep rooted.

White students in my race and ethnicity class often learn the most, but few take it. All colleges should require a course like this to graduate.
