SEVERAL PETS RESCUED FROM HOOD AVENUE STRUCTURE FIRE
Syracuse, NY – On Friday, August 28, 2026, at 9:13 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were dispatched by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire at 252 Hood Avenue. Crews from Station 2 on Lodi Street arrived to find smoke coming from a 2½-story residential structure. As firefighters began stretching hose lines, they observed flames through a window toward the rear of the home. A Signal “99” was transmitted, indicating a working fire.
Firefighters quickly entered the home to search for occupants and extinguish the fire. Crews located the fire on the first floor toward the rear of the home and knocked it down in less than 10 minutes. The fire was declared fully extinguished within 20 minutes of the initial dispatch. Thorough searches confirmed there were no human victims; however, firefighters located several pets inside the home and safely removed them.
The single-family home sustained fire damage that was contained to the room of origin, with minor smoke damage to the remainder of the structure. No one was home at the time of the fire, but the occupants were allowed to return once firefighters completed operations. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.
According to Syracuse Fire Investigators, the fire originated in the first-floor dining room. The cause was determined to be the unattended burning of a candle.
Crews remained on scene for more than an hour conducting overhaul, picking up equipment, and assisting Fire Investigators.
