In celebration of the inauguration of SU's new Chancellor, Mike Haynie, the University Archives will participate in campus-wide programming by holding a pop-up exhibition titled "Beyond the Classroom: Syracuse University Students Making an Impact." It will highlight how SU students in the past responded to historical events on campus or throughout the nation, brought change to campus, or tried to make a better future in their own ways. The exhibition will include photographs, printed materials, documents, and artifacts from the University Archives. The pop-up will take place in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons, which is on the first floor of Bird Library, from 2 to 5 pm on Thursday, September 17. Everyone is welcome! To whet your appetite, here are a few sneak peeks at what we're including in the exhibition.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. In the days that followed, the campus community wrote messages of grief, unity, hope, and fear on sheets that were installed on the Quad in front of Hendricks Chapel by the Student Association. These Sheets of Expression, as well as those from the first and tenth anniversaries of the attacks, are now preserved in the University Archives. Syracuse students, faculty and staff left messages of faith and hope on the Quad after 9/11. Twenty-five years later, the messages live in the University Archives.

Syracuse University held its very first classes this week in 1871. The Hall of Languages had not yet been constructed, so SU's first home was downtown in the Myers Block, located at the southeast corner of Montgomery and East Genesee Streets. Along with a photo of that building, the archivists are providing images of pages from SU's first catalog, which includes information about what kind of classes students were expected to take. If you were a student back then, you took the Classical or Scientific courses, the closest we now have to majors. Be sure to take a peek at the Miscellany page to read about tuition and boarding expenses. There were no dorms back then, so students had to live with local Syracusans or in boarding houses. You can tell from the descriptions about equipment and the library that everything was still being put together when this catalog was published. Hard to believe Syracuse University was once so new to the world!

A new academic year has arrived and with it all the students that make Syracuse University such a vibrant place! It's a particularly exciting time for those starting out their college careers as first-year students. In the spirit of welcoming the Class of 2030 to The Hill, we're sharing some advice to new students from across the decades, all of which can be found in the University Archives' collections.

This 1924 broadside appropriately titled "FRESHMEN!" provides some key tips and guidance to the new faces. While the dictate to "obey upperclassmen" has passed with the times, the reminder to "say ‘hello.’ We all are glad to see you here" still rings true. First-year students from the class of 1945 received some guidance on campus traditions and "idiosyncrasies" from "How to be a Freshman at Syracuse," especially surrounding Orange athletics and rivalries. And, finally, The Daily Orange staff's "Freshman Survival Kit" from 1984 shared the sage wisdom that "surviving in Syracuse takes more than a heavy winter coat and waterproof boots...It takes time to adjust to being the new kid on the block, but you'll fit in before you know it." To all our new and returning students, the Archives sends a hearty welcome home!

Because the Syracuse University Marching Band is getting new uniforms this year, they have given the University Archives a few of the recently decommissioned uniforms! The drum major, marching band, and color guard uniforms were worn between 2013 and this year. There is also a sparkly Orange Girl outfit from the 2020s - and a baton! The archivists always love a bedazzled piece of history. All these newly-accessioned uniforms will be added to the Syracuse University Marching Band Collection.

Now for some forestry fun! 115 years ago this month, the College of Forestry, now known as the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, was established. Its history has always been intertwined with Syracuse University, where the teaching of forestry dates to 1908 in the Botany Department. By 1910 Chancellor James Roscoe Day was lobbying for the creation of a College of Forestry in Syracuse, which Gov. John Dix formally established on July 28, 1911 as the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University. The college is now a separate institution but enjoys a special relationship with Syracuse University. Shown here are Chancellor Charles Flint and Syracuse Mayor Charles G. Hanna engaged in a rigorous forestry activity at a College of Forestry log-cutting event in 1929. On the left Vice Chancellor William Graham looks on as Forestry Dean Franklin F. Moon straddles the log while hopefully keeping his fingers clear of the saw blade.

Anna Shuff G'26, who just earned her master’s degree in library and information science from the iSchool, has been working in the University Archives this summer. Her biggest project is the processing of a major addition to the Bishop Jesse Truesdell Peck Papers. Peck was one of the primary founders of Syracuse University. At the state Methodist Convention in Syracuse in February 1870, when a resolution was passed to found the University in that city, Peck and his wife pledged the first $25,000 (their life savings) towards the University's endowment, which inspired others to contribute funds as well. He also served as the first president of Syracuse University's Board of Trustees. This addition is a donation from Peck family descendants, who alerted us that the papers had soot on them from a past fire. Luckily the materials weren't burned, but they do need a good cleaning. Under the guidance of SCRC's conservation librarian, Shuff has been surface cleaning the papers with a special vulcanized rubber sponge as she processes them. She took "before and after" photos of one letter as an example of her efforts.

Much of this donation, which includes correspondence, diaries, printed materials, and writings, relate to Peck's religious work, but we have already come across a few documents that document SU history, which is very exciting!

As we head into the holiday weekend, the archivists are looking forward to some quality summer fun. We’re drawing inspiration from these Syracuse University School of Nursing students from the late-1940s who took the opportunity to catch some sun on the roof of Memorial Hospital during a break from classes and rounds. Hope everyone has a happy 4th with plenty of sunscreen!

It’s National Mascot Day! To celebrate, here are some of the earliest yearbook appearances of the orange that we’d all come to know as Otto. An unofficial mascot for several years before getting the job permanently in 1995, Otto has seen a lot of wardrobe updates over the years. The archivists personally love the heavy eyeliner and vintage sneakers being sported in these photos from the 1984 yearbook in which the yet-to-be-named mascot was described as “the little orange guy doing summer saults on the sidelines.”

The campus is typically quiet in early June - but not this year! The University is humming with the construction of three new dormitories: 544 University Place (along Ostrom Avenue); 315 Waverly Ave. (replacing Kimmel Hall) and 501 Comstock Ave. (where the old Booth Parking Garage was). All these cranes, trucks, beams, hard hats and noise remind the archivists of campus in the mid-1950s when several dorms were also constructed.
