Today we recognize the contributions of workers across our community and country whose dedication helps keep services running and neighborhoods thriving. Wishing everyone a safe and restful Labor Day as we take time to appreciate the work that strengthens Syracuse and the nation.

September is Baby Safety Month, a great reminder to take a fresh look from the perspective of our smallest residents.

🚗 Check that car seats are correctly installed and fit your child’s current height and weight.
😴 Create a safe sleep space with baby on their back, on a firm, flat surface free of blankets, pillows, and toys.
🏠 Secure furniture, cover outlets, use safety gates, and keep small objects and chemicals out of reach.
🔥 Keep hot items, cords, and other burn hazards away from curious hands, and make sure your smoke alarms are working.

Babies and toddlers have a talent for finding things you didn’t know they could reach. A quick safety check today can help keep their next discovery from becoming an emergency.

Your grill may be asking for a little TLC 🔥
In roughly 1 out of every 5 grill fires, the grill had not been cleaned (source: NFPA).

Grease and food buildup can ignite, turning tonight’s burgers into a much bigger barbecue than you planned.

Before firing up the grill:
• Clean grease and buildup from the grates and trays.
• Check underneath the grill for accumulated grease.
• If you use a wire grill brush, inspect your grill grates for loose bristles before adding food. Consider using a bristle-free grill-cleaning tool to eliminate the risk altogether.
• Keep the grill a safe distance from your home, deck railings, and anything that can burn.
• Never leave a lit grill unattended.

A clean grill makes for better burgers and fewer visits from us. 🚒

Through the highs, lows, smoke alarms, and sirens… we’re committed to keeping Syracuse safe. Our firefighters are on the job 24/7 responding to medical calls, car accidents, structure fires, and all the unexpected “for better or worse” moments that come with the job.

That means more kids, buses, bikes, and crossing guards on Syracuse streets. Help keep everyone safe this school year when driving and remember to:

🚸 Slow down and obey school-zone speed limits
🚌 Stop for school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm
📵 Put the phone down and focus
🚲 Watch for kids walking and riding on streets and sidewalks
⏰ Give yourself extra time so you’re not rushing
🛑 Follow crossing guard directions

Our wildland crew was called out again to support wildfire operations in the northwest in areas of high need. 🚒

Captain Nelson and seasonal firefighters Maae and Rivera were dispatched as part of a Utah Task Force, and we are proud of the work they’ve done to protect lives, property, and communities. We look forward to seeing you back soon!
