100% volunteer located in the Town of Onondaga just west of Syracuse in Upstate New York.

We currently operate 2 -1000 gallon Engine's, a 75’ Ladder Truck, a combination Heavy Rescue/Engine and 2 squad vehicles.

At 10:36 hours yesterday morning, Taunton was activated for a Residential Fire in the Onondaga Hill Fire District. Taunton Ladder 5 (FF Darling) handled the alarm.

The initial 911 caller reported seeing black smoke from the structure, and hearing the fire alarm going off. First arriving fire units found smoke throughout the structure with high heat and low visibility.

Ladder 5 arrived 4th due and handled the responsibility of securing utilities, and “opening up” walls and ceilings to expose any hidden fire.

The fire was primarily contained to the basement of the residence and was called under control after approximately 20 minutes, being held at a “Signal 98.”

Taunton units operated on scene for approximately an hour and a half before returning to service.

Today, we reflect and remember the tragic events from 25 years ago.

Today we remember the 343 firefighters, 63 law enforcement officers, 8 EMS workers and numerous others who were lost at WTC.

At approximately 12:53 hours, the Taunton Fire Department was activated for mutual aid to the Onondaga Hill Fire Department District for an odor investigation at Onondaga Community College.

Staffed in quarters, Car 1 (Chief Phelan), Car 2 (DC Harris), and Ladder 5 (Lt. Williams) responded immediately upon dispatch.

Upon arrival, crews learned that a refrigerant (Freon) leak had occurred involving a commercial cooler. Maintenance personnel believed the leak had been isolated. Firefighters from Taunton and Onondaga Hill Rescue 1 conducted atmospheric monitoring throughout the affected portion of the building.

Car 1 established Command, while Car 2 was assigned Operations. Due to the nature of the incident, a tactical decision was made to request the Syracuse Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team, whose specialized personnel and equipment are specifically designed to safely identify and mitigate hazardous-materials incidents.

Upon arrival, Syracuse HazMat personnel detected high concentrations of refrigerant inside the walk-in cooler as well as an adjacent classroom.

Taunton and Onondaga Hill personnel then conducted ventilation operations while continuing to monitor atmospheric conditions. Ventilation continued until readings confirmed the affected areas were free of hazardous concentrations and safe.

All units cleared the scene at approximately 14:30 hours.

At approximately 14:25, Taunton Ladder 5 was dispatched to a residential fire in the 200 block of Rutledge Street in the Solvay Fire District.

Ladder 5 (Lt Williams), staffed in quarters, responded immediately upon dispatch and arrived as the first-due truck company while the engine company was establishing a water supply.

Upon entering the residence, crews encountered a smoke condition and located a minor fire that was mostly extinguished upon arrival. Ladder 5 personnel assisted by opening walls to check for fire extension, allowing the engine crew to complete extinguishment, and ventilating the residence. Car 2 (DC Harris) had interior operations of the incident.

Ladder 5 cleared the scene and returned to service at approximately 15:00.

At 14:23 hours yesterday afternoon, Onondaga Hill Fire was dispatched to a serious signal 80-rollover, with possible ejection, involving an emergency vehicle.

At 14:27 hours, Taunton Engine 6 was special requested to the scene. Engine 6 (FF Darling) and Car 3 (A/C Martin) handled the alarm, arriving 5 minutes post-request.

Companies on scene worked together, treating and packaging two patients before turning them over to AMR.

Taunton units cleared just before 15:30 hours.

🔥🔥Bunk-In Week 2026🔥🔥

Yesterday afternoon, Bunk-in Members completed their two week training program.

Bunk-in members trained to the following schedule (08:00-14:00), and completed the mandatory requirements to successfully become interior Taunton firefighters.

W: Forcible Entry, Search

F: Handlines, Extended Lays

TH: Flashover Simulator/Live Fire, Can Confidence
F: Firefighter Survival, R.I.T.

Bunk-in members start classes and duty shifts starting this Monday. They will continue to acclimate themselves to firehouse living and the environment they strive to one day have a career in.

At approximately 9:50 hrs, Taunton was dispatched to a reported stove fire in the 4600 block of Onondaga Boulevard.

Car 1 (Chief Phelan), Ladder 5 (Lt. Williams), and Rescue 2 (FF Woodard) arrived in less than two minutes, as crews were training just one block away. Upon arrival, units located a grease fire involving the stove.

Crews secured the stove and confirmed the fire was fully suppressed. Engine 4 (DC Harris) and Car 3 (AC Martin) arrived shortly afterward and assisted with ventilating smoke from the apartment.

No extension of the fire into the structure was found.

At 17:12 hours, Taunton was activated for a reported multiple-occupancy structure fire in the 4600 block of Onondaga Boulevard.

Taunton Car 1 (Chief Phelan) arrived three minutes after dispatch and found a three-story apartment building with nothing evident from the exterior. Upon investigation, crews encountered a moderate smoke condition coming from the basement.

Taunton Engine 4 (DC Harris) arrived as the first-due engine company, established a water supply, and deployed a 300-foot pre-connected hoseline to the basement while crews worked to determine the source of the smoke. Taunton Ladder 5 (FF B. Smith) arrived as the first-due truck company and assisted crews in the basement with locating the source.

Taunton Engine 6 (FF Rudiger) and Rescue 1 (Lt. Cox) also operated on scene and assisted with the incident.

Crews determined that the smoke condition was caused by an overloaded washing machine, which produced smoke that traveled throughout the building.

Mutual aid was provided by the Fairmount Fire Department, Solvay Fire Department, Onondaga Hill Fire Department, Howlett Hill Fire Department - 100% Volunteer and South Onondaga Fire Department.

The Taunton Fire Department is happy to welcome our two "Bunk-in" Students (1 new & 1 returning) to the department!

Returning Bunk-in:
Jaden Darling - Redfield Fire Department

New Bunk-in:
Nicholas Woodard - Newfield Fire Company

These young men will spend the next two weeks working with our Officers and Members, learning the knowledge and skillset needed to be a "Taunton Firefighter."

Established in 1991, the Bunk-in program gives out-of-county firefighters free room and board, as well as gear, training, and many other firematic amenities, in return for providing supplemental staffing during the daytime hours.
