Our partner National Federation of the Blind (National Federation of the Blind of New York State) will once again host their "Living with Vision Loss" event at Onondaga Community College later this month and we're excited to once again have a table at the event! This all-inclusive event will benefit people with
vision loss, their families, and stakeholders working with the

Coming off the extended Labor Day weekend, we're now officially into the second week of Deaf Awareness Month. Today we shine a spotlight on a program we're particularly proud of, our Bedtime Book Series! Our partnership with the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County and Onondaga County Public Libraries brings bilingual children's story times in both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English to libraries across the region. This allows the hearing and Deaf communities to enjoy the sessions together. Afterwards, families are given access to pre-recorded ASL/English readings of the same book, giving families a chance to practice the signs they learned.

We're early in , so today we'll focus on our education and advocacy efforts for the Deaf and hard of hearing community. With inclusion at the very core of our human existence, we leverage our education and inclusion efforts increase a sense of belonging to the broader community for our Deaf and hard of hearing friends. At its core, the month is intended to educate the public about the experiences of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, advocate for equal access, and celebrate Deaf culture - all things we actively engage in year-round here at AURORA!

Big thanks to our friends at United Way of Cayuga County for having us be part of their "Taste of United Way" event yesterday at the Hilton Garden Inn - Auburn, NY! Visitors to our table had the chance to learn about our services and conduct some hands-on blindfolded activities such as using a liquid level indicator and a signature guide! 🙌

One of the more rewarding efforts we embark upon here at AURORA includes going out into the community and helping fellow organizations better serve those who are blind or visually impaired. Our longtime partners at S**T Van in Auburn serve Cayuga County residents who are 60 years and older as well as disabled individuals of all ages at low to no cost. That's where we come in. We're proud to provide annual training to help this wonderful service provide exceptional care for their passengers who are blind or visually impaired. We even managed to sneak in a few laughs along the way - thank you for hosting us and your continued partnership!
