Happy Labor Day from the Central New York Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO! ✊

Today, we celebrate the working people who built our communities, fought for the rights we have today, and continue to power Central New York every single day.

To our union siblings everywhere: thank you for the work you do, the solidarity you show, and the movement you continue to build.

Enjoy this day that belongs to working people. 💪

This Labor Day, Central New York Area Labor Federation President Ann Marie Taliercio reflects on the history of Labor Day and the power of workers standing together through our local labor movement.

From the first Labor Day parade organized by a local labor council in 1882 to the more than 100,000 union members we represent across Central New York today, our strength has always come from solidarity.

As Ann Marie writes, we will build the future of the labor movement the same way our greatest victories were won: worker by worker, union by union, and community by community.

From the first Labor Day, the "union of unions" has reminded us of our common bond, writes president of CNY Area Labor Federation.

The Central New York Area Labor Federation was proud to join union members from across New York State at the 2026 New York State AFL-CIO COPE Convention in Albany this week!

Union members from across Central New York were well represented, bringing together leaders and activists from our affiliated unions and Central Labor Councils. We also heard from many of our incredible labor champions and elected officials who continue to stand with working people and fight for a stronger labor movement.

Our Field Director, Miles Burnett, was also proud to serve as a Sergeant-at-Arms for this year’s convention.

We’re ready to get to work across Central New York to support our union-endorsed candidates and elect leaders who will stand with working people! ✊

Across Central New York, we’re getting ready to support and elect candidates who will stand with unions, fight for working families, and have our backs when it matters.

Last night, our Greater Syracuse Labor Council brought together local candidates and union members for Candidate Education Night to discuss the issues and priorities that matter to working people. Thank you to the candidates who joined us, asked thoughtful questions, and engaged directly with members of organized labor.

No worker who dedicates their career to serving our communities should be priced out of the education they need.

The AFL-CIO, AFT, AFSCME, and National Nurses United are taking the U.S. Department of Education to court over the RISE rule, which limits access to federal student loans for critical fields like nursing, teaching, public health, and social work.

At a time when our communities already face serious shortages of nurses, teachers, and other public service workers, we should be making these careers more accessible — not harder to pursue.

Read more about the lawsuit and what’s at stake:

On July 1, federal student loan limits were capped for nursing, teaching and other degrees
