Sylvester Firefighters attended a class today hosted by Crisp County Fire Department. In September 2024 Greene County Fire & Rescue lost a Battalion Chief in a tragic accident when a refrigerator trailer loaded with frozen chicken unexpectedly exploded. This class brought awareness as well as changes needed to response peramaters when responding to tractor trailer fires. Greene County Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Wiggins did an amazing job.

🔥 Update: South Georgia Burn Restrictions Eased

Governor Kemp has issued an executive order easing outdoor burning restrictions in parts of South Georgia.

While this is a step in the right direction, burning is still restricted in 17 South Georgia counties, as shown on the map below. These areas continue to face extreme drought and elevated wildfire risk.

⚠️ What to know:
➡️ Some counties are now allowed to resume limited outdoor burning
➡️ Others remain under restrictions due to ongoing fire danger
➡️ Conditions can change quickly—always check before you burn

Even where restrictions have been eased, extreme caution is still critical. Dry conditions remain across much of the state, and it only takes one spark to start a wildfire.

We appreciate everyone doing their part to help reduce wildfire risk across Georgia.

Fighting fire. Protecting forests. Serving Georgia.

For Immediate Release:

The Sylvester Fire Department will not issue any burn permits until the drought has ended. Most of Worth County is in an extreme drought as of this week and large fires are burning in our state. Here are a few tips for you to help keep Sylvester safe.
• Avoid burning any natural debris or vegetation during these conditions
• Remember, burning of household garbage and lumber is against the law
• Keep the grass around your house mowed and bushes trimmed to help reduce fuel for fires.
• Keep a clean, defensible space of at least 30 feet around all buildings and major items in your yard. Also, keep your roofs cleaned and free from natural combustibles such as pine straw, and leaves.

Please keep everyone affected by the wildland fires in your thoughts and prayers.

*****ATTENTION SYLVESTER RESIDENTS*****
Sylvester Fire Department will be conducting hydrant flushing starting Monday April 20th. This will take approximately two weeks to complete.
Some areas may experience low water pressure during the hydrant flushing process. Sediment stirred up by the hydrant flushing may accumulate in water lines and can affect water clarity.
Citizens who experience any unusual problems with their water after the hydrants are tested, such as discolored water or excessive air, are encouraged to turn on a faucet outside of the house and let it run for five to ten minutes. This will normally clear the agitated water from the service line to the home. Please delay any laundry until both the hot and cold water lines of the washer have cleared all sediment and returned to normal.
