Today we had a passing of the torch. It’s a time honored tradition in the fire service to issue Badge 1 to the most senior firefighter of the department. With the recent retirement of Andy Ries it was time for the Badge to be passed to Greg Wilcox a 27+ year member of the department. Greg has worn many hats inside the department and there is no doubt that he will continue to be a mentor and embody the position as senior man. Help us congratulate Greg aka JUMBO.

On a recent incident, one of our crews was met with an unexpected challenge involving wildlife the kind of situation you don’t find in a textbook or on the training ground. Without hesitation, our members went above and beyond to ensure the animals involved were handled safely, humanely, and with the professionalism our community expects and deserves.

This is a great reminder that the fire service isn’t just about fires and medical calls. Every shift can bring the unexpected, and our members are constantly tested by scenarios that require calm judgment, compassion, and adaptability. These skills are built through experience, teamwork, and a commitment to doing the right thing.

Proud of this crew and proud of the work our members do every day!

Congrats! Heidi has made a massive impact on the lives of so many in our field. Enjoy your retirement!

We are proud (and a little sad) to announce the retirement of the legendary Heidi Hess, a trailblazer for women in emergency services and an Owens instructor since 1988!

Hess taught thousands of students who are now saving lives throughout our communities. She has been the heartbeat of the Owens EMT program, caring for students and ensuring they are fully prepared. In all, she spent 37 years teaching future EMTs at Owens.

For her career, she broke into a field dominated by men and ascended to the position of fire department captain, but it was not easy. She filed two important lawsuits to fight discriminatory hiring practices toward women.

“I always say, I’m not the best paramedic in the world, I can hold my own, and I’m sure there are better instructors out there, too, but I give my students 110 percent,” Hess said, adding, “I’ve been blessed with a good career.”
