Bill Davis, public information officer for Jackson County, sat down with two of those early firefighters to discuss how they were recruited as volunteer firefighters some 45 years ago. They also enjoyed a bit of fun reminiscing. Joining them is the son of one of those firefighter chiefs.

Jackson County is celebrating its 175th birthday this year with a grand celebration on Sept. 12, from 4 โ€“ 8 p.m. at Whittier Heritage Grounds. Firefighters from Qualla Fire Department will provide emergency services during the event to keep us safe.

As the saying goes, โ€œtheyโ€™ve come a long way.โ€ But one thing remains โ€“ commitment to serving the community and doing all they can to keep people safe.

Chief Moore noted they thought they were busy in those early days when they ran a call a week. Now the department runs more than 1,000 calls a year!

In the video are:
โ€ข Retired Fire Chief Kent Moore, currently serving as an Assistant Fire Chief
โ€ข Retired Asst. Fire Chief John Thomasson, also currently serving as an Assistant Fire Chief
โ€ข Michael Moore, Chief Mooreโ€™s son, who graduated from Smoky Mountain High School in 2002 and has also seen many of the changes and improvements over the years.
