Jackson County to Host Community Open Houses
as Part of Housing Plan Engagement Process

Jackson County, NC., June 15, 2026 - The Jackson County Planning Department is inviting all residents to attend one of two Community Housing Open Houses on Tuesday, July 14, or Wednesday, July 15. Both sessions will run from 6-8 p.m. and will feature the same format and content, allowing residents to attend the session that best fits their schedule.

The Open Houses will have an open, interactive format, with different stations for residents to provide input on housing challenges and preferences, access information about the Comprehensive Affordable Housing Strategy and learn more about resources across the community. There will be no formal presentation from County staff or the consultants, but the open house will allow attendees to ask questions and contribute ideas to help shape the future of housing in Jackson County.

โ€œHaving input directly from our residents and hear their concerns will allow us to best address the affordable housing issue here in Jackson County,โ€ said Michael Poston, Director, Jackson County Planning Department. โ€œAs county leaders, our goal is to pragmatically address quality-of-life issues for our residents and businesses - housing is one of those top items on the list, and folks who call Jackson County home can help us with a solution.โ€

Representatives from the partner consulting firm, TPMA, will be on-site to facilitate interactive stations and answer questions about the housing study and strategic plan. While RSVPs are not required, attendees are encouraged to RSVP via the link below to help organizers plan accordingly. Light refreshments will be provided.

Cleanup Continues - Great info from Jackson County, NC Emergency Management about the debris removal teams operating in and around some of our waterways here in our county to mitigate any future flooding.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT -
ADDITIONAL DEBRIS CLEAN-UP STARTING FOR JACKSON COUNTY

Jackson County residents and visitors may notice crews working in and around local waterways over the coming weeks. Through the North Carolina SMART Program, Southern Debris Removal (SDR) has received an additional FEMA approval to continue debris removal operations in select waterways throughout Jackson County. This work is in addition to the debris removal efforts previously completed and will focus on areas identified as priorities for continued mitigation and public safety.

The purpose of this work is to support safe emergency response operations and reduce the risk of future flooding by removing debris that could create dams, restrict water flow, or otherwise impact critical infrastructure during heavy rainfall events. Crews will be focusing primarily on waterways near bridges, dams, culverts, and other critical infrastructure.

Following a recent coordination meeting between the Jackson County Office of Emergency Management and Southern Debris Removal, an agreement was reached that all SDR employees and contractors working in and around waterways within Jackson County will wear high-visibility safety vests for increased public awareness and safety.

If access to a waterway requires crossing private property, SDR representatives will make direct contact with the property owner and obtain signed permission before entering the property. No work will be conducted on private property without the ownerโ€™s consent.

Southern Debris Removal will continue utilizing the former T&S Hardwoods property, now owned by Jackson County, as its debris management site. Residents are encouraged to use caution when traveling in the area, as large trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment will be entering and exiting the site and accessing nearby highways throughout the duration of the project.

We appreciate the publicโ€™s cooperation as this important mitigation work continues. These efforts will help improve the resilience of our waterways, protect critical infrastructure, support emergency operations, and enhance public safety throughout Jackson County.

The new Emergency Shelter for domestic violence victims and survivors here in Jackson County will soon open its doors for operation for individuals and families needing a place to stay during an emergency.

The Center for Domestic Peace, Inc. held an Open House Monday for Jackson County commissioners, leaders, and community advocates.

A few days earlier, Dr. Thom Brooks, Executive Director, Center for Domestic Peace, met with Jenny Lynn Hooper, Jackson County Commissioner, District 3, to tour the facility (video). A few finishing touches are being done, including some furnishings, mattresses, and safety featuresโ€ฆbut the finish line is in sight.

The project has been in the works for years and will address the real need in Jackson County to help those in domestic violence situations, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Previously, these folks had to be housed in emergency shelter in neighboring counties or hotels. Now, the new emergency shelter can house more than two dozen people and give them a place to stay right here in Jackson County.

The Center for Domestic Peaceโ€™s Board Members are grateful to Jackson County Local Government and Dogwood Health Trust for their considerable monetary contributions to the building process. They also thank Mountain Projects for their help in securing the land that the shelter was built upon, Cannon Foundation for the generous furnishings that they provided, and Evergreen Foundation and The Community Foundation of North Carolina for their generous donations as well.

Dr. Brooks said this could well be one of the finest domestic violence shelters in the state of North Carolina, something Jackson County residents can take pride knowing help and hope is there for those in need.

And for those seeking help, itโ€™s only a phone call away. Call the Safeline 24/7 at (828) 586-1237 to speak with a trained, local advocate.
