⚠️ TRAFFIC ADVISORY – CRASH RECONSTRUCTION ⚠️

Crash reconstruction related to the ongoing hit-and-run investigation will begin tomorrow, August 11, at approximately 9:00 a.m. on US 23B.

🚧 For a short period of time, traffic will be detoured onto Skyland Dr. while investigators conduct the reconstruction. Motorists should use caution in the area and follow posted detour signs.

🔎 The reconstruction is part of the investigation and will assist investigators in documenting the crash scene and gathering additional evidence.

🚗 Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and use caution in the area. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as investigators complete this portion of the investigation.

Sylva is an incorporated town located in central Jackson County, in the Plott Balsam Mountains of Western North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 2,588. It is the county seat, taking over the role from nearby Webster in 1913.

Belinda Clawson is our 2026 Firefighter of the Year!

Clawson named Firefighter of the Year

In emergency services, it’s not uncommon for people to wear many different hats in service to their communities. Whether they’re answering 911 calls, responding to emergencies, or volunteering their time, the commitment to serving others never stops.

Today, we’re proud to recognize one of our own. Jackson County 911 Director Belinda Clawson was recently honored by the Town of Sylva Board of Commissioners as Sylva Fire Department’s Firefighter of the Year.

Belinda brings the same positive attitude, strong work ethic, and unwavering dedication to everything she does. Whether she’s leading the telecommunicators at Jackson County 911 or serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Sylva Fire Department, she exemplifies what public service is all about.

FINAL UPDATE: Road is now open, all units have cleared the scene 3:53pm

UPDATE: DOT is on scene at this time 3:33pm

Yellowbird Branch is closed around the 400 block until DOT arrives to clear the road. Time of post is 3:03pm.
