We have just a few more spots open on our Wonders of the Night hike (for kids aged 8-12 and their parents/adults) at Pinnacle Park tomorrow evening! REGISTRATION is required here by noon on 6/13: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/v5PhDCTY4y

Join BMT naturalist Amy Duggins for an immersive experience in the nighttime forest. This is a night walk especially for kids aged 8-12 and their grown-ups. We will explore night vision, encounter fireflies and other luminous creatures, enjoy a little storytelling, and find out what makes the night so magical. 9pm-10:30pm.

Our last two Nature on Tap events of the year are coming up! This Thursday you can make your own hanging basket with Kara from Friends of Panthertown and learn about all the amazing invasive removal they do! In June, come on back to Inno with Skye from Mainspring and learn all about our amazing diverse salamanders in WNC and even meet some live sally’s!

Excited to partner with Balsam Mountain Trust and Innovation Brewing on this fun evening! We'll get deep into the world of salamanders during this event, including meeting some real salamanders that live in the woods around us.

With gratitude and admiration, we say goodbye to our senior snake, Elsie. Our (estimated) 12-year-old animal ambassador, Elsie had been retired from programming the last few years, after spending a good decade educating others about her species and just how lovely and charming snakes can really be. In her retirement Elsie got to do whatever she pleased, which usually meant she was snuggled up in her cave with a mouse (dinner) and some cozy artificial heat. Elsie had plenty of personality but was certainly our laid-back queen. Simple and sweet, and perfect in every way. She had been on countless programs and was incredibly beautiful and special and worked hard in her prime to educate others. Animal ambassadors fill the gap between many humans and nature, and we cannot thank them enough. Here's to you our wonderful beady-eyed girl. đź’—
And a special thank you to Jacob Long for capturing such beautiful photos of Elsie.

We realized we have been a little remiss in sharing some things that are happening at Balsam Mountain Trust. Our Executive Director, Michael Wall, will be transitioning from his role later in May to embark on an exciting new adventure as the Director of the Arboretum at the University of Kentucky. Since 2022, Michael has been a champion for cultivating community around conservation and land stewardship in our cozy corner of WNC. While we’ll miss his humor and vision, we are incredibly proud to see him take this well-deserved step!

Want to say, “Fare thee well,” to Michael and Allison and enjoy some stories about the nature they have seen at Innovation Station over the last 3.5 years of “championship creek-watching”? Then join us this Wednesday at Innovation Station in Dillsboro .

What’s next for the Trust? ~ The "steady hands" are on the wheel! Our Board of Directors has formed a search committee to find our next conservation champion. In the meantime, our amazing staff and animal ambassadors are moving full speed ahead with all the programs and community-building that you know and love. The Trust is more than a nonprofit; it’s a promise to the future of Western North Carolina. We are entering this next chapter with more momentum than ever!
