Disappointing, but not unexpected. Alabama isn't backing down. We stand with Attorney General Steve Marshall and will keep fighting for Alabama voters and the August 11 Special Primary Election.

Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance dedicated to honoring the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Observed each year on the last Monday in May, the holiday traces its roots to the years following the American Civil War, when communities across the country gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and tributes. Because of this tradition, the observance was originally known as “Decoration Day.”

The Civil War, fought from 1861–1865, resulted in the loss of more than 620,000 American lives and left communities across the nation grieving sons, fathers, brothers, and husbands.

In the years that followed, Americans began organizing ceremonies of remembrance to honor those who never returned home. Over time, the observance expanded to recognize all American military personnel who died in service during every conflict and war. This tradition continues today, and on this Memorial Day, we honor and remember our fallen heroes.

In 1971, Memorial Day was officially established as a federal holiday.

Today, Americans observe Memorial Day in many ways — by visiting cemeteries and memorials, placing flags and flowers at gravesites, attending ceremonies and parades, pausing for moments of reflection, and gathering with family. While the holiday weekend is often considered the unofficial beginning of summer, the true purpose of Memorial Day remains remembrance, gratitude, and honor for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Key Distinctions:

• Memorial Day honors American military service members who died in service to the United States.

• Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, with particular recognition given to living veterans. Veterans Day is observed annually on November 11.

• Armed Forces Day honors those currently serving in the United States military, including Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve personnel. It is observed on the third Saturday in May.

• Memorial Day began after the Civil War as “Decoration Day,” a tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags dating back to the 1860s. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially established as a federal holiday.

With reverence and respect, today we honor our fallen heroes and pay tribute to the families who also sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today. We remember those who gave their lives in service to our nation and extend our deepest gratitude to the loved ones they left behind.

May we never forget the true cost of freedom. 🇺🇸
