We want everyone to have a happy and safe summer, and that means discussing bike and scooter safety. With school out for the summer, there will be an influx of children out during the day time enjoying the sunshine. It is everyone's responsibility- whether in a car, or on a bike or scooter, to be safe and know the rules.

Here are some tips to ride safely this summer:
- Under 16 years old? Wear a helmet! It’s Maryland law.
- When riding in the roadway follow all the rules of the road. You are considered a vehicle.
- If riding on the sidewalk, look both ways before crossing the road or entering an intersection.
- Put down your phone and don’t wear headphones. No distractions and pay attention!
- Parents, it starts with you! Teach your children how to ride safely.

We are here to help. Need a helmet? Let us know! We will be happy to provide one as we have them available. Please contact the Sykesville Police Department at (410) 795-0757 to see if we have one in stock.

What a wonderful time yesterday participating in the Carroll County leg of the MD Special Olympics Torch Run. Sergeant Kirkner and Chief Spaulding were paired with an amazing athlete, David, and got to meet his awesome parents. We walked alongside David from the Farm Museum to (almost) McDaniel College, and then participated in a very heart-warming ceremony followed by lunch. We had such a great time, and can't wait until next year! Thank you to all those that made this event such a huge success.

We want everyone to have a fun and safe summer, but that means learning what e-bikes are allowed on our roadways. Share this post to help neighbors stay legal, safe and aware.

Before you ride, learn the rules: where you can ride, required lights, helmets and age limits.

If you're a parent, remember parental responsibility applies to how these bikes are used by your kids. Parents can be issued citations as applicable.

E-bikes, mopeds, motor scooters & motorcycles ridden on roadways are considered motor vehicles and riders must follow all rules of the road.

Operating a "super e-bike" on public infrastructure without a license, registration, and insurance is considered a serious motor vehicle offense. Law enforcement can issue citations for these offenses.

Please contact your local law enforcement agency with any questions. The Sykesville Police Department can be reached at (410) 795-0757.

Prayers for the speedy and complete recovery of Officer Catalfamo of the Baltimore County Police Department, who was shot while in the line of duty yesterday in Pikesville, MD. Also, our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent bystanders who were injured in this senseless and tragic act of violence.

Baltimore County Police Officer P. Catalfamo remains in critical but stable condition at Shock Trauma after being shot on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in the 900 block of Milford Mill Road, 21208. The other victim who was also struck by gunfire continues to recover from a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Meanwhile, the suspect remains hospitalized and is listed in stable condition. The suspect’s name will be released upon the filing of criminal charges.

Detectives have determined that two Baltimore County police officers discharged their service weapons during the incident. Officer Catalfamo was not one of them. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Today, as with every day, we remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom. May we never forget the price of our liberty.

Please join us in pausing at 3:00 PM in a minute of silence for the National Moment of Remembrance. We pause to honor, reflect and remember the heroes who never made it home.

A scam had been reported in Carroll County involving suspects impersonating Deputy Sheriffs. Victims receive phone calls claiming they have missed jury duty and must pay an immediate fine to avoid arrest.

NOTE: Law enforcement does NOT contact individuals by phone to demand payment or threaten arrest for missed jury duty.

ADVISE: Do NOT provide personal or financial information. Disconnect the call and report the incident to local law enforcement.
