June 3rd, 2026 – Press Release
“Public Meeting to Be Held on the DeKalb County All Hazards Mitigation Plan”
The DeKalb County Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee is in the process of updating the DeKalb County All Hazards Mitigation Plan. An update to the Plan is required every five years by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A public meeting will be held on June 11th at 4:00 p.m. in Sycamore, IL, to review the proposed changes to the Plan.
The public is invited to attend this meeting and to provide comments on the Plan. The Plan will identify activities that can be undertaken by both the government and the private sector to reduce the safety hazards, health hazards, and property damage caused by floods, severe summer and winter storms, tornadoes, and other natural hazards.
The draft Plan will be available for viewing at the DeKalb County website, www.dekalbcounty.org, or a copy of the draft Plan can be requested at the DeKalb County Emergency Services Disaster Agency, 150 North Main Street, Sycamore, IL (815) 899-0725.
The public meeting will be held on Thursday, June 11th, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.at the DeKalb County Legislative Center, “Gathertorium”, 200 N. Main Street, Sycamore, IL. Comments on the draft plan will be accepted until June 18th, 2026.
"Hazard mitigation" means doing everything that can be done to reduce the impact of the natural hazards on people and property. It does not necessarily mean controlling floodwaters or stopping tornadoes. These hazards are natural phenomena and, in many cases, mitigation means adjusting what people do in the face of this natural activity.
DeKalb County is subject to natural hazards that threaten life and health and have caused extensive property damage in the past. Again, while these hazards are acts of nature, the impacts on residents, public facilities, businesses, and private property can be reduced through hazard mitigation.
The update to the DeKalb County All Hazards Mitigation Plan will be considered by the DeKalb County Board for adoption and by the DeKalb County municipalities that participated in the planning process. After the Plan is adopted, DeKalb County and the participating municipalities will remain eligible for hazard mitigation grant funding through the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
