It’s graduation week for Sweet Home High School’s Class of 2026.

Earlier today, kindergarten students from Foster Elementary School helped celebrate our seniors by gifting them handmade congratulations cards. Seniors collected their handmade cards while picking up their last day of school celebratory frozen yogurt. It was a special way to connect our youngest students with members of the graduating class.

Graduation will be held on Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at Husky Field.

Congratulations, seniors! We are proud of you and excited to celebrate this milestone with you.

Sweet Home School District 6th graders are completing Outdoor School at Camp Tadmor this week.

Throughout the week, students have had the opportunity to learn about science, nature, teamwork, outdoor skills, and the environment around them. They have explored the outdoors, participated in hands-on learning activities, and built connections with classmates and staff.

Outdoor School is also about making memories that students will carry with them for years to come. Sometimes that means learning something new on a nature hike — and sometimes it means singing “Baby Shark” together around the campfire.

We are grateful for the staff, volunteers, and camp partners who help make this experience possible for our students each year.

The following information was shared via ParentSquare with Sweet Home School District families following this morning’s police activity that resulted in schools being in secure protocol until we received the All Clear from local law enforcement.

Community Update Regarding District-Wide Secure Protocol

Dear Sweet Home Families,

Earlier today, all buildings in the Sweet Home School District were placed into Secure Mode due to reports of a police situation on the west end of Long Street. While initial reports suggested a possible active shooter, we have since confirmed with the Sweet Home Police Department that the incident was a swatting hoax.

Our Commitment to Safety

The decision to place the entire district into Secure Mode — which includes locking all exterior doors and keeping all activities indoors — is one we do not take lightly. However, we will always err on the side of caution when it involves the safety of our students.

Mobilizing our system requires precise coordination across transportation, maintenance, courier services, itinerants, contractors, teachers, and administrators. Our primary focus during those initial moments is ensuring every individual is physically safe and accounted for.

Communication Timeline

We understand the importance of timely parent notification. Our current system through ParentSquare reaches 99% of our families. Today’s timeline was as follows:

- Initial Action: Within 20 minutes of the initial concern, after confirming with PD that there was a report of a possible situation, we made the call to enter Secure mode.

- Notification: Once all students and staff were confirmed secure, we immediately sent notifications via Parent Square and Facebook to inform the community.

- Resolution: Upon receiving the All Clear from the police, we updated Parent Square and Facebook and verified that every district group was out of Secure mode.

I understand how deeply troubling these situations can be to all. We continue to drill and practice to prevent the unthinkable from happening here. We do ask for your patience and understanding as we continue to put student safety absolutely first, then parent notification, community notification, and event resolution.

We take our duty of care to our students and staff very seriously.
Thank you for your continued support and trust as we work to keep our schools safe.

Sincerely,
Terry Martin, Superintendent
Sweet Home School District #55

10:30 a.m. update:

Schools have resumed normal operations. The earlier police activity was on the west end of Long Street and did not involve any schools. However, as a precaution, we went into secure mode until law enforcement gave us the all clear.

10:10 a.m. update

Law enforcement has announced that the situation is all clear and we are resuming normal operations. Thank you.

Sweet Home High School staff were notified this morning of a report that a student may have had a firearm. Law enforcement was immediately contacted, and the school followed established safety procedures by entering lockdown.

The student was questioned by law enforcement and school district administration. The student did not have a firearm in his possession. Following further investigation, an Airsoft-style device resembling a real firearm was found off campus but near the school. Based on the investigation, it is confirmed to be the device students reported seeing.

The high school has resumed normal operations.

We appreciate the students who promptly reported their concerns and thank law enforcement for their immediate response and assistance in resolving the situation safely.

Here is the press release from the Sweet Home Police Department.

On Friday, May 15th, 2026 at about 8 a.m., SHPD received a call from Sweet Home High School staff regarding a student having possibly brought a firearm onto campus. SHPD officers responded and the school was placed on lockdown. Officers and staff were able to locate the juvenile in class, but no suspicious items were immediately found. The school has since been released to resume normal operations.

Through further investigation, as well as cooperation from other students, officers found the item that was brought to school. It was located off campus, but nearby, and was determined to be a realistic looking air-soft style pistol (essentially a toy that uses air to propel plastic bb’s).

The Sweet Home School District is addressing the issue with the student and their family at this time. If anyone has information that may be helpful to this case, we encourage you to contact the investigating officer to have the information added to the investigation. Senior Officer Sean Potter is the primary investigator on this case, and can be reached by calling the non-emergency line: 541-367-5181. Case number for reference is 202603313.

Following a hydraulics unit, Sweet Home High School students participated in an industry tour at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Salem, which supports Lakota and Black Hawk helicopters.

Students had the opportunity to talk with technicians about how they maintain the aircraft, manage specialized tools, and apply technical skills in a real-world aviation setting.
