We sometimes hear concerns like âit took too long to respondââespecially when it comes to certain fire alarms. So hereâs a quick breakdown of what actually happens when a fire call comes in:
1. The Call Is Made â A fire alarm (manual or automatic) triggers a signal to a monitoring company, who then contacts Morris County Communications Center or Parsippany Police.
2. 911 Dispatch â Morris County or Parsippany dispatchers receive the information, confirm the address and type of alarm, and tone out the appropriate fire departments over the radio.
3. Volunteer Response â Our members are not in a firehouse 24/7. They stop what theyâre doingâwhether at work, home, or with familyâand drive to the firehouse to staff the trucks.
4. Crew Assembles â We don turnout gear, mount the apparatus, and hit the roadâusually in about 6-8 minutes from the time the pager sounds.
5. Arrival & Investigation â Once on scene, we assess the situation. Many commercial fire alarms are triggered by dust, heat, steam, or maintenanceâbut we treat each one as the real thing until proven otherwise.
It may seem like it takes a while from the outside, but what youâre witnessing is an entire fire department mobilizing from scratchâ24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 100% volunteer.
We appreciate your patience and your supportâand weâll keep showing up, ready for whatever comes next.
