Today, we honor and remember Chief Edward Pavlica, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on June 3, 1971.

Chief Pavlica was killed while responding to a structure fire when the fire apparatus he was riding on overturned. His death marked the first line-of-duty death in our agency's history, a solemn moment that forever shaped our organization.

Although 55 years have passed, Chief Pavlica's legacy continues to live on. His dedication to service, courage, and commitment to protecting others remain an enduring part of our department's history. In recognition of his sacrifice, our Public Safety Building proudly bears his name, ensuring that future generations remember the man who gave his life in service to his community.

Today, we pause to reflect on his sacrifice and express our sincere gratitude to the Pavlica family for the service, dedication, and sacrifice of Chief Edward Pavlica.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of former Swartz Creek Area Firefighter, Barb Urbanik.

Barb joined the Swartz Creek Area Fire Department in June of 1998 at the age of 58, proving that no matter your age or gender, drive and dedication can lead to success. During her time with the department, Barb demonstrated unwavering commitment and service to the community. In recognition of her dedication, she was awarded the Christopher A. Hilden Firefighter of the Year Award in 2001. Barb proudly served until March of 2005.

Barb’s contributions to the Swartz Creek Area Fire Department and the community she served will not be forgotten. Her determination, compassion, and commitment left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege to serve alongside her.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 17, 2026, at St. Robert Catholic Church, 310 North Cherry Street, Flushing.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Private burial will be held at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Please keep Barb’s family, friends, and all who knew her in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
