FMRETIRED has been notified of the Passing of Colonel Jack H. Mechanic (Retired) on 20 August 2026.

Colonel Jack H. Mechanic passed away on Thursday, 20 August 2026 at the age of 80. Col Mechanic served in a variety of Comptroller assignments during his career, including Comptroller, Strategic Air Command and Comptroller, US Air Forces Europe. While at USAFE he conceived and developed the TOP DOLLAR competition and was known as the Father of TOP DOLLAR. In his last active-duty assignment he established the Defense Finance and Accounting Service - Omaha location, serving first as the active-duty director and then as its civilian director. He later served at the Senior Executive level for NASA and then later again for DFAS. For the last several years Col Mechanic and his wife Kathy (Kathleen) made their home resided in Florida. At this time FMRETIRED understands that he will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are pending.

FMRetired has been notified of the passing of Chief Master Sergeant William (Bill) Heern. Chief Heern's contributions to the Comptroller Career field were many. He spent time at AFAFC in Denver Co during his distinguished career. He will be missed by all who served with him!

FMRetired has been notified of the passing of MSgt Paul L. Harder. MSgt Harder died unexpectedly on 20 January 2025. MSgt Harder's contributions to the FM career field as an instructor at the school house at Sheppard AFB and its move to Keesler AFB have not gone unnoticed. His obituary can be viewed at:
