Firefighters have been running hard as of late. Locally, our men and women answered a large call in Treutlen County by rendering mutual aid at the county line yesterday, then turned right back around and ran numerous fire calls right here at home into the night. Add in all the fires across South Georgia, and itโ€™s clear: conditions are dry, resources are stretched, and the risk is high. โš ๏ธ

Thatโ€™s what prompted the Georgia Forestry Commission to issue a temporary burn ban that includes Emanuel County.

We know it can be tempting to clear a pile while the weather feels right, but no burn is worth the risk right now. No pile of debris is worth potential property damage or lives. ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Dreading the summer heat? โ˜€๏ธ Hereโ€™s how to stay cool and get a little help this season.

Beginning Thursday, April 2, at 9 a.m., the senior center will start taking phone calls to schedule appointments for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for the summer season. This date is only for booking an appointment, not the day applications are taken.

Because this is a federally funded program, the guidelines are rigid and the number of appointments is limited. ๐Ÿ“ž Staff will answer calls as quickly as possible, but it may take more than one attempt to get through. Appointments will be set up on a first-come, first-served basis. No walk-ins will be allowed.

To qualify, everyone in the household must be 65+ or medically homebound. Once your appointment date arrives, youโ€™ll need to bring the following with you:

โ€ข A photo ID for all members of the home who are 18 or older.
Social Security cards for all household members
Proof of the past 30 days' income for all household members. No bank statements!
Your most recent electric bill.

โš ๏ธ Bills with a credit of $1,000 or more are not eligible for payment.

โš ๏ธ Note: If you set up an appointment outside your county of residence or if you do not qualify, your application will be denied.

The general public may call on May 5 starting at 9 a.m.

Please help us get the word out by sharing this important information. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Emanuel County: The Place to Snow (apparently!) ๐Ÿฅฐ

Be honest... Did you really think we'd get some snow after all? Two separate snow days in one year here has to be a record of some kind, right? How we feeling about our current situation? Let's see your neck of the woods all dressed in white! โ„๏ธโ˜ƒ๏ธ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ

๐ŸŽถ Do you wanna build a snowmaaaaan? ๐ŸŽถ

Well, Emanuel Countyโ€ฆ You just might get your chance.

For all you who were disappointed by last weekend's anticlimactic weather, report to the front row. This one (might!) be for you (if you believe the weather folks).

After our briefing with National Weather Service, the long and short of it is this: snow is very likely here tomorrow, and travel conditions are expected to get "sus" in a hurry. ๐Ÿ‘€

Forecasters are giving us a 99 percent chance of at least 1" of snow. Most of Emanuel County (meaning places like Swainsboro, Adrian, and Twin City) are expected to land in the 1" to 3" range. In reality, though, it's going to depend on where you are. Such is the life of being one of Georgia's biggest counties by land mass. It makes forecasting for our expansive square miles really tough.

The northern tip of the county could see 3 to 4 inches. For those of you who are new here and didn't see last week's updates, that's the Summertown, Cross Green, Garfield area. (Nice of you to finally join us, by the way! Hit the follow button, please. Signed, your friendly government comms person who's trying to reach a goal! ๐Ÿคฃ)

The far south end near (Oak Park) could only see 0 to an inch.

Thereโ€™s also a low-probability, worst-case scenario showing up to 6" here in Emanuel County. The NWS explained this as a 1 in 10 chance we'll get that much accumulation, so it's not cause for panic. We're telling you for transparency and so you can make your own decisions about how you want to prepare.

Hereโ€™s the part we really need you to hear: whether we get 1 inch or several inches, travel is expected to become very difficult. ๐Ÿš—

So, when do you need to park the car and stay put?

๐Ÿ•– The first video model run we're attaching shows rain moving into Emanuel County around 7 AM tomorrow morning. Between 8:00 and 11:00 is when snow starts to appear in that model. This is in line with the timeframe at which forecasters think snow will be at its heaviest (between 7 AM and 1 PM).

The second video model shows all snow in our area being completely moved out by 2 AM Saturday night/Sunday morning, however you want to look at it.

This is expected to be light, fluffy snow. It sounds great in theory, but it comes with a downside. โš ๏ธ It will stick to our roads pretty fast in cold temps and can blow back across the roads after theyโ€™ve been cleared. In other words, even if a road looks better for a little while, it may not stay that way. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

Now, let's talk about ice. Ice was not a focus in todayโ€™s briefing. It was not mentioned even once. Thatโ€™s good news. Snow alone, though, is still cause for driving concern. Let's keep it a buck: most folks can't drive on a sunny day. None of us have snow chains, and y'all know we don't have snow plows, so how about we all do our part on this group project and just keep the keys on the counter, okay? ๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšซ

Considering the fact that the thickest jackets most of us own are those lightweight fleece North Faces from high school, itโ€™s going to be way too cold to be out much anyway. ๐Ÿฅถ

๐ŸŒก๏ธ After the snow moves in, so will arctic air. Starting Saturday and sticking around into early next week, weโ€™re looking at overnight lows in the low teens and even single digits.

Tonight wonโ€™t be terrible. Most of Emanuel County is sitting in the 30 to 35ยฐ degree range, though the northern part of the county could dip closer to 25ยฐ.

๐Ÿ’จ But the wind chill is what really matters. Even tomorrow, itโ€™s going to feel like 10 to 15 at times.

Then, Saturday night into Sunday morning is when things get especially serious. Actual lows will be between 15 and 20 for most of the county, but wind chills will make it feel more like 0 to 10.

Those โ€œreal-feelโ€ or "feels-like" temperatures are why the National Weather Service has put us under an extreme cold warning from 7 PM Saturday until 1 PM Sunday. ๐ŸงŠ

๐Ÿ“Œ Here's your friendly reminder to protect the 4 Ps. That's your people, pets, plants, and pipes.

Winds will also get up pretty good. We're told to expect gusts 20 to 35 miles per hour over the next 2 days. Widespread power outages were not a frequent talking point for the NWS today like they were last week, but the forecaster did mention them a time or two because of these winds, so we want to bring that possibility to your attention. โšกGather your blankets, charge your devices, all the usual advice applies here.

๐Ÿ’ฌ We checked in with Public Safety Director Courtney Terwilliger after the webinar, and his message was simple: ๐Ÿ

If youโ€™re picking up supplies, think groceries, medications, and basic essentials for a few days. Again, this is our advice not because of power outages necessarily but because of road conditions. We are also aware of reports that our local Walmart is without power right now, so you may want to plan alternate shopping spots.

And yes, for those still humming that infamous song from Frozen, go ahead and enjoy your snow moment. ๐Ÿ›ท Dust off those makeshift sleds if you must. Just remember if you get hurt, emergency crews will probably have a hard time getting to you, so... You know, use your noggin. ๐Ÿง

NWS is not providing any more briefings beyond the one they gave today, so if you want the latest, you'll need to keep up with your trusted local meteorologists.

Take care!

01/24/2026

So we don't bury the lead: there's a big update tonight concerning tomorrow. Scroll to the exclamation points if you want to get there faster, but if you don't mind taking the long route, keep reading from right here.

Emanuel County, weโ€™re so proud of you we could kiss your feet! ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿฆถ (For legal purposes, this is a joke.) ๐Ÿ˜… Milk and bread ๐š๐ง๐ toilet paper are all in stock at Walmart! ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿž๐Ÿงป Yโ€™all listened! ๐Ÿ‘ Letโ€™s give ourselves a round of applause! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

And you can keep it going, too, because we have good news to report on the winter weather aspect of this system. Initially on Wednesday, none of Emanuel County was in the impact zone. Then we got your heart pumping a little Thursday and told you a tiny portion had been included in the striping, and we told you last night that tiny portion had grown a little bigger. If you have whiplash, take it up with Mother Nature. ๐ŸŒช๏ธ But maybe donโ€™t give her ๐ญ๐จ๐จ much trouble because ๐š๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐จ๐๐š๐ฒโ€™๐ฌ ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐๐š๐ญ๐ž, ๐ง๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐„๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ฎ๐ž๐ฅ ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ ๐ณ๐จ๐ง๐ž. ๐Ÿ™Œ

The tenth of an inch of ice prediction we gave you from the NWS was a possible but not probable scenario.

Now as weโ€™re closer to onset (a fancy way of saying as the system moves into Georgia), the models are not showing that as a possible scenario. ๐Ÿšซโ„๏ธ

In other words, that initial prediction is holding steady as this thing moves into and across the Peach State. ๐Ÿ‘ Thatโ€™s good news! ๐ŸŽ‰

Temps are looking good. ๐Ÿ‘ Tonightโ€™s lows are going to be between 30 and 40ยบ. Tomorrow during the day, itโ€™s going to be a mixed bag depending on where you are in the county exactly. The northern part (weโ€™re looking at you, Summertown, Cross Green, Garfield ๐Ÿ‘€) could get up to 50 or 55, but the southern part (Oak Park) could get up to 65 or 70! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Itโ€™s gonna drop back down tomorrow night, of course. Right now, weโ€™re looking at between 35 and 40 for most of us, and it wonโ€™t warm up a whole lot on Monday. ๐Ÿฅถ Those highs are hovering between 45 and 50.

In todayโ€™s briefing, NWS did not include any data for the frigid cold behind this system, but pull up your weather app and youโ€™ll see that still appears to be true. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Swainsboroโ€™s temps are showing lows in the 20s. ๐ŸงŠ So, same advice. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Prepare now like you normally would for those kinds of temperatures, regardless of this wintry system. โœ”๏ธ

โ€ผ๏ธ Now, hereโ€™s where we need you to really focus. ๐Ÿ‘€โš ๏ธ While we appear to be out of the direct and obvious threats of a winter system like this, NWS is now communicating the possibility of severe weather. โ›ˆ๏ธ Weโ€™re attaching the model run showing it. We werenโ€™t planning to update again unless something major changed, but weโ€™ve gotten a few questions today, and we donโ€™t want to leave anyone hanging. ๐Ÿ˜Š And there ๐ก๐š๐ฌ been ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž change. Nothing significant, but itโ€™s worth bringing to you.

Before we go any further, letโ€™s all pause and agree to ๐๐Ž๐“ ๐๐€๐๐ˆ๐‚, okay? Do you promise? Nod your headโ€ฆ

Okay. Thank you! Here we go. ๐ŸงŠ

First, the big picture hasnโ€™t really changed for Emanuel County. Most of us are still just outside the main impact area, and the overall message remains the same: our risk is low. That said, todayโ€™s model ๐๐ข๐ tweak some things a little.

First, that tiny sliver of northern Emanuel County we told you about yesterday that was in the minor impact zone? It has gotten just a ๐ฐ๐ž๐ž bit larger. Thatโ€™s all. The forecasted conditions we told you about yesterday are still the same: a majority of our county is expected to see no ice, and

If ice ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ happen in that expanded-but-still-small northern part of the county, it should be a ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ฒ amount (still a tenth of an inch or less). Forecasters call this a โ€œglaze.โ€ Itโ€™s a thin layer, like what covers your windshield or porch railings, and it typically builds up on elevated surfaces. Thatโ€™s your bridges, overpasses, power lines, tree limbs, etc.

Thatโ€™s the first change: that a ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž bit more of Emanuel County has been added to the minor impact zone. (โ€œMinorโ€ impacts, as youโ€™ll see in one of the attached graphs, simply mean inconveniences to daily life and, for lack of a better word, sketchy road conditions.)

So, in short, could parts of the northern half of the county see a glaze? Itโ€™s possible. But itโ€™s not probable.

The second change is ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ง impacts could occur.

Earlier forecasts showed that any potential issues we might run into would happen earlier in the day tomorrow. Now, weโ€™re looking at a later window. Conditions will start to decline Saturday night into early Sunday morning

For Emanuel County specifically, if we get any effects from this system, it would most likely be a brief mix of rain and freezing rain late Saturday night, tapering off Sunday morning as temperatures start to warm up again.

Speaking of temperatures, itโ€™s going to be cold. That hasnโ€™t changed. Saturday night, weโ€™re looking at lows of 33, 34, 35 countywide. Sunday, weโ€™re going to see it warm up during the day: highs in the upper 50s to near 60 in the late afternoon before plunging back down to the mid-30s during the night. Those daytime highs on Saturday will be good for us because it should help limit how much of that ice ๐ข๐Ÿ ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ ๐ž๐ญ ๐ข๐ญ sticks around.

As for the wind, like we told you yesterday, this weekend is still going to be quite breezy. Weโ€™re looking at gusts of 20 to 25 miles per hour at times. This is slightly down from yesterdayโ€™s report, but again, Iโ€™m not sure your golf ball will fly straight. (It probably doesnโ€™t anyway, but I digress.)

One more thing before we wrap up, and this part matters a whole lot even if we get 0 ice anywhere in the county. Behind this system, much colder air is coming in. By early Tuesday morning, Swainsboro could dip to around ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—ยบ. (Admittedly, that temperature is from the iPhoneโ€™s weather app and not from NWS, but the rest came straight from their briefing.) Thatโ€™s cold enough to cause issues ๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐š๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ž๐ž๐ค๐ž๐ง๐.

So, this is a good time to:

* wrap your pipes;
* take care of your animals;
* and make sure youโ€™ve got what you need to stay warm early next week.

Think of it as a two-for-one preparation situation: winter weather vigilance for the weekend, plus regular cold-weather prep for what follows.

โœ… So, where things stand right now? Areas along and north of I-20 remain the ones with the biggest concern, so, again, check on your folks up there. Unless theyโ€™re [insert a team you donโ€™t like] fans.

No, but seriously, some general advice: For our directionally-challenged friends, thatโ€™s Louisville, Sandersville, Augusta, Waynesboro, Macon, Athens. Basically, pick out where you think Atlanta is, draw a big olโ€™ circle about three-quarters of the way down the state, and stay out of that area. Grow your wings and migrate, little snow birds!

Weโ€™ll keep an eye on things and update again if something meaningful changes. Please keep your eye on the weather in case something else shifts. Weโ€™ve got some wonderful, very skilled, knowledgeable, studied regional TV meteorologists, and weโ€™re in one of the small parts of Georgia that is covered by 2 different markets. Weโ€™re in the Augusta DMA and the Savannah DMA. Some food for thought for whatever channel you tune into: keep in mind where that station is headquartered and what impacts theyโ€™re most likely going to get and cover. Augustaโ€™s coverage will look vastly different than Savannahโ€™s, as it should. Thatโ€™s good perspective to have as a viewer.

The National Weather Service will brief again tomorrow, and you can find that on their website. For now, weโ€™ll link todayโ€™s in the comments.

Have a good rest of your Friday evening!

We told you weโ€™d give an update after todayโ€™s briefing, so here ya go!

Another 24 hours of data and another briefing from the NWS Peachtree City/Atlanta has brought good news. As predicted, Old Man Winter is staying to our north for the most part. ๐Ÿ‘ด๐ŸŽ‰

That said, full transparency here, the ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ง๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ง ๐ญ๐ข๐ฉ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ฒ (think Cross Green, Summertown, Garfield areas) was included in the minor impact zone today. See the first map attached. ๐Ÿ‘€ We called the NWS to ask for some messaging for you folks who live in those areas. Yesterday, none of Emanuel County was in the impact area, and we wanted to know how, if at all, this changes things for yโ€™all. The forecaster we spoke with said basically, youโ€™ll see cold rain, but they do not expect any ice. If it happens, itโ€™ll be in tiny amounts, no more than a tenth of an inch, so ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ข๐œ!

For the rest of us, the maps are showing ๐ง๐จ ๐œ๐ก๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ข๐œ๐ž. Yes, you read that correctly: no chance of ice! You can read it again if you like. ๐ŸงŠ๐Ÿšซ

Temperatures have come up, too, which is another piece of good news. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Weโ€™re expecting highs on Saturday of up to about 55ยฐ and overnight lows in the upper 30s. For those of us who have been out of school for a while, thatโ€™s above freezing (32ยฐ). Again: ๐๐Ž ๐ˆ๐‚๐„, ๐๐„๐Ž๐๐‹๐„!

Sunday looks even better with highs in the 65 to 70ยฐ range depending on where you are in the county, and lows hovering between 30ยฐ and 35ยฐ.๐Ÿ™Œ

Now, it ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ be windy. ๐Ÿ’จ Maybe rethink your golf plans. (Or donโ€™t. Doesnโ€™t matter to me. I donโ€™t like winter golf, so I won't be there anyway. ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ ) If youโ€™re going outside, grab a windbreaker and your Chapstick. We could see wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour at times between Saturday and Monday. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Thatโ€™s pretty windy, but if you find yourself a little down about it, just rememberโ€ฆ We survived a hurricane. Weโ€™ll be all right. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Overall, this is expected to be a low-impact situation for Emanuel County. โœ… The areas that will see the brunt of this system are I-20 and north. If youโ€™ve got folks up that way, tell โ€˜em to do like Hairy Dawg and Hunker Down ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”— and holler if they need something.๐Ÿ‘

Now, there ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ be another briefing tomorrow. Weโ€™ll update again if (and only if!) anything major changes. ๐Ÿ“ก As always, look up your local and regional meteorologists for more regular updates and enjoy the improved outlook! ๐Ÿ™‚
