On Saturday, September 27, 2025, SBBFD was dispatched for a Fire in a Commercial Building at 2900 S. West Bayshore Dr. Initial reports from an employee were that an appliance was on fire in the building.
E911 arrived on scene within 6 minutes of being dispatched and found a Large Commercial Structure with Flames and Smoke showing from the roof. Additional resources from neighboring departments were requested bringing Aerial Ladders and Tankers to the scene.
A Hoseline was placed and advanced into the building. The fire on the inside of the building was controlled within approximately ten minutes. However, the fire had extended to the roof. Multiple Aerial Ladders were used to assist in controlling the fire, gaining access to and inspecting damage to the roof.
A Hazardous Materials Response team was requested for Air monitoring equipment and to support command decision making with the numerous chemicals on site.
This size and scale of the incident required additional personnel and equipment from all of Leelanau County, Grand Traverse and State level resources. Nearly 50 personnel responded. The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
In total, 11 Fire Departments responded to this incident.

The Michigan Mutual Aid Box Alarm System 3701 HazMat team responded to this incident and operated in both command and mitigation roles.
The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office, Leelanau County Office of Emergency Management, Leelanau County Dispatch, Michigan State Police and Grand Traverse 911 all acted in critical supportive roles to mitigate this emergency.
Strong mutual aid partnerships are a necessity, and we can not thank these various agencies enough for their support and efforts in this incident!
