Public Service Notice:
Fraud/Scam Alert – Impersonation of Sheriff’s Office Personnel

Members of the Community,
The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office would like to make you aware of a recent increase in fraud and scam attempts affecting residents in our area.

We have received multiple reports of individuals being contacted by scammers who are falsely claiming to be members of the Sheriff’s Office. These callers may tell you that you have an outstanding warrant or legal issue and attempt to pressure you into making immediate payment to avoid arrest.

Please be advised of the following:
• The Sheriff’s Office will never contact you by phone regarding an outstanding warrant—whether state or federal.
• We will never instruct you to go to a smoke shop, convenience store, or any retail location to make a payment.
• We will never ask you to purchase gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or any other monetary instruments as payment.
• We will never request that you provide payment information or PIN numbers over the phone.

These tactics are commonly used by scammers to create urgency and fear in order to obtain money or personal information.
If you receive a call of this nature:
• Do not provide any personal or financial information.
• Do not send money or purchase gift cards.
• Hang up immediately.
• Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.

If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, you are encouraged to contact the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office directly using a verified phone number.

We urge all residents to remain vigilant and to share this information with family members, friends, and neighbors—especially those who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Respectfully,
Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office

INVESTIGATIONS TRAINING

Today, several members of the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office, to include Accident investigators and Evidence Technicians had the opportunity to get hands on training with new updated mapping equipment that is extremely valuable in the documentation of accident and crime scenes. The equipment, Leica Geosystems GS 13 and GS 20 units, were purchased and made possible through a 2% grant, courtesy of the Grand Traverse Band Of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. This new equipment replaced a unit that was originally purchased in 2011 and allows the Sheriff's Office to maintain a high standard and document important crime and accident scenes for future reference and use in the aid of successful prosecutions.
