“We are excited to watch it grow with Theo.” 🌲

This landed in our inbox after last week’s MY FIRST TREE visits, and it may say everything we hoped the program could become.

More than 150 Eastern White Pines left our hands last week. Now they’re being planted in backyards, along woods, and beside homes across Leelanau County—with kindergarteners who get to grow right alongside them.

And we’d love to see where the rest of them landed.

If your Leelanau County kindergartener brought home a MY FIRST TREE seedling, send us a photo of your planting day or tag the Leelanau Conservation District in your post. Help us begin collecting the story of these first trees—and the kids growing alongside them.

This is only the beginning.

A tree to grow with you. 🌲

Last week, more than 150 Leelanau County kindergarteners went home with an Eastern White Pine of their own through the first year of MY FIRST TREE.

We visited five local schools, read Little Pine, learned to “find the five,” and sent each child home with a seedling to plant and care for with their family.

Our hope is simple: give a child a tree, and perhaps begin a lifelong affection for this place.

MY FIRST TREE is one small expression of how the Leelanau Conservation District works to cultivate relationships between people and this place.

Not every tree wants the high ground.

Black Spruce is a tree of the north—well adapted to cool, wet, acidic soils and the boggy landscapes where many other trees struggle. Its short, four-sided needles and small cones are clues that help distinguish it from its spruce relatives.

But knowing a tree also means knowing where it belongs.

Why plant one? If you have a wetter, open part of your property, Black Spruce can be a good fit—adding evergreen cover, wildlife habitat, and another layer of diversity to the landscape.

The lesson is simple: the right tree matters, but so does the right place.

Black Spruce seedlings are available through our Fall Conifer Sale.

Pre-orders close October 2. Pickup October 16.

Give it a roll.

White Spruce needles grow one at a time around the twig. Pick one and roll it gently between your fingers—its four-sided shape is one simple way to know you've found a spruce.

But knowing a tree is more than knowing its name.

White Spruce is at home in northern Michigan's cold climate. Its dense evergreen branches provide year-round cover for wildlife, while its tolerance for cold and exposed conditions makes it a familiar part of our northern landscape.

Why plant one? Give it sun and enough room to grow, and White Spruce can provide year-round screening, wind protection, wildlife habitat, and a strong evergreen presence for decades to come.

Plant it because it belongs here—and give it the time and care to become part of the place.

White Spruce seedlings and transplants are available through our Fall Conifer Sale.

Pre-order through October 2. Pickup October 16.

Two will tell you.

Red Pine is easy to recognize once you know what to look for: long needles held in bundles of two.

But knowing a tree is more than knowing its name.

Red Pine is at home in the dry, sandy soils and sun-filled landscapes of northern Michigan. It thrives where many trees struggle, growing into a tall, straight conifer that provides year-round cover for wildlife and remains green through our longest season.

Why plant one? Give it sun and room to grow, and Red Pine is a durable choice for larger properties, windbreaks, wildlife habitat, and restoring tree cover on dry or open ground.

Plant it because it belongs here—and because the tree you put in the ground this fall may be part of this landscape long after you're gone.

Red Pine seedlings are available through our Fall Conifer Sale.

Pre-order through October 2. Pickup October 16.

It starts small.

A seedling in your hands. A few minutes spent planting. A little care through the first few years.

And then, it grows.

This fall, the Leelanau Conservation District is offering five native conifers selected for northern Michigan landscapes: Eastern White Pine, Red Pine, White Spruce, Northern White Cedar, and Black Spruce.

Pre-order through October 2. Pickup October 16.

Over the next few weeks, we'll introduce you to the trees—how to know them, why they belong here, and how to care for them.

The deadline to order native plant kits is May 15.

After that, the season keeps moving.

The shoreline still needs holding together.
The wet corner still waits for the right plants.
Pollinators will keep looking for habitat wherever they can find it.

This is your last call to start something that belongs here.

Whether it’s one small garden bed, a stretch of shoreline, or the edge of the woods behind your house—native plants have a way of changing how a place feels over time. Quieter. Healthier. More alive.

We’ve made it simple to begin.

Choose the space.
Choose the kit.
We’ll help with the rest.

Order by May 15.

Start where you are. Grow what belongs.
