I am Jasmine Morton and I am running for Circuit Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit of West Virginia. Currently the 14th Judicial Circuit, the 17th Judicial Circuit is comprised of Webster, Braxton, Clay and Gilmer counties. I am running for the seat often referred to as the Braxton County seat and was previously held by Judge Richard Facemire. As a candidate, I bring substantial experience in cri
minal law, as well as civil law. I served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Braxton County for three (3) years and was the elected prosecutor for Braxton County for nearly seven (7) years. Additionally, I served as a Guardian ad Litem and practiced in the private sector for one year with the prestigious law firm of Bailey, Javins and Carter. I was the lead prosecutor in thirteen (13) jury trials throughout my career and have handled several murder cases. I am well equipped to handle complex legal issues and address the same with a sense of fairness and civility. There has never been a female candidate for the position of Circuit Judge in the 14th Judicial Circuit and as a woman I bring a different prospective to this position. The office of Circuit Judge is a powerful position and one, if elected, I will not take lightly. I made the decision to run for Circuit Judge in hopes of implementing some change in the judiciary. We currently do not have treatment courts, be it Family Treatment Court or Adult Drug Court, in any of the four counties that comprise this Circuit, yet rural West Virginia is plagued by a drug epidemic. What we are currently doing is not working. I am hopeful that if elected I can implement these types of programs into our region in an effort to address these issues. This in no way means I am not “tough on crime”, it means I am not opposed to trying different avenues of rehabilitative treatment. These programs would simply provide other alternatives that address the root causes of why people commit crimes and/or abuse their children. I am a life long resident of West Virginia and have dedicated nearly my entire career to serving the people of the 14th Judicial Circuit. I am a mother, wife, daughter and friend to many. I grew up in Webster County, graduating Salutatorian from Webster County High School. I attended West Virginia Wesleyan College for my undergraduate degree and obtained my Juris Doctorate degree from West Virginia University College of Law. Upon completion of law degree, I returned to the 14th Judicial Circuit where I served as a law clerk for the Honorable Judge Jack Alsop. I have resided in Braxton County since 2011 and intend to raise my family here. My husband, Logan Mohr, is a corporal with the West Virginia State Police, having been a state trooper more than sixteen (16) years. We have one dog, Dexter, and three cats. I love rural West Virginia and want to raise my family here. I have strong ties to all four counties as my mom, Joyce Morton Carpenter, is from Gilmer County and my eldest brother, Chris Arnold, resides at her homeplace where he is raising his family. I would be honored to serve the people of Webster, Braxton, Clay and Gilmer counties as their Circuit Judge. Experience matters! Vote Morton for Circuit Judge 2024!
