Tax Credit for low-income Seniors (even for prior years!): To help lower-income seniors avoid higher property taxes and remain in their homes, the State has The Property Tax Fairness Credit which allows eligible Mainers to take between $2,000 and $4,000 credit depending on filing status; it also allows the benefits to remain constant if a spouse has passed away.
Note: This program is not administered by Municipalities and is claimed when filing your Maine State Tax Return, form 1040ME.

Over 180, Tax accounts past due as of 05/22/26 - IMPORTANT Info. on unpaid RE/PP 2026 Tax accounts: The June/July lien process starts soon with incurred cost associated with unpaid RE/PP taxes, like mailing fees and Hancock County Registry of Deed’s fees, increased. If you would like to confirm your account status, please contact: [email protected].
As stated on Tax Notices, “Interest will be charged on unpaid taxes at an annual rate of 5% beginning 10/01/2025 and 03/31/2026”. If you think you may have been underpaid or paid late, please contact the office. Under Maine’s Property Tax Law, taxes are the responsibility of an owner as of April 1st. For the 2026 Tax year, it is the owner as of April 1st, 2025, though the current owner’s property could be liened.
