At approximately 11:04 AM, the Surry County Sheriff's Office 911 Communications Center received a call from the Sussex County Sheriff's Office that their deputies were pursuing a vehicle reported stolen out of Petersburg. The vehicle was connected to an armed carjacking that occurred the previous evening.

As the pursuit entered Surry County, several Surry County Sheriff's Office deputies joined the pursuit in support of Sussex County deputies. The pursuit continued into Isle of Wight County, where additional assistance was provided by the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office, Smithfield Police Department, and the Virginia State Police.

The pursuit concluded on Old Stage Hwy, where the vehicle stopped. One suspect was taken into custody immediately by Surry County deputies. Two additional suspects fled the vehicle on foot but were quickly located and taken into custody without further incident.

The Surry County Sheriff's Office would like to thank all participating agencies for their professionalism, coordination, and commitment to public safety. Through the combined efforts of all law enforcement agencies, the suspects were apprehended, helping to ensure the continued safety of our communities.

🚨 HEAT ADVISORY FOR SURRY COUNTY 🚨

The Surry County Sheriff's Office would like to remind all residents to take extra precautions today as a Heat Advisory has been issued and reported this morning.

While air temperatures are expected to reach the 90s, the heat index is forecasted to feel well over 100 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.

Stay safe by:

💧 Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
🏠 Staying indoors or in air-conditioned locations when possible
👕 Wearing lightweight, light colored clothing
🐾 Making sure pets have access to shade and fresh water
🚗 Never leaving children, adults, or pets in a parked vehicle
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Checking on elderly neighbors, family members, and those who may be vulnerable to extreme heat

Be aware of the signs of heat related illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, and excessive sweating. If you or someone else experiences symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, seek medical attention immediately.

The Sheriff's Office encourages everyone to stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed throughout today's extreme heat conditions. Your safety is our priority!

Sheriff Carlos Turner and everyone here at the sheriff’s office would like to congratulate Ny’Asia Norman on being awarded a $1,000 scholarships from the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute. Ny’Asia will be continuing her education at the Virginia State University in the fall.

The Virginia Sheriffs’ Scholarship program was established to provide an opportunity for young people across Virginia to pursue an education in criminal justice. This program is limited to students attending Virginia colleges and universities.

This past Friday, Sheriff Turner and members of the Sheriff’s Office attended the funeral for Carroll County Deputy Logan Utt, who was killed in the line of duty.
