Today, we pause to remember and honor the United States military members who gave their lives for our freedoms this Memorial Day.

Today's activities include the Surfside Beach Memorial Day Golf Cart Parade 2026 at 11:00 a.m. and the Memorial Day Service 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Our guest speaker is Chief Bill Mickle of the Surfside Beach Police Department Surfside Beach, South Carolina.
William Mickle is a proud disabled U.S. Marine Corps veteran who
served from 1989 to 1993, attaining the rank of Corporal. He attended boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, followed by advanced combat training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina, and the Military Police Academy at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
While stationed at Twenty-Nine Palms, California, he served as a
military police officer, providing security and law enforcement support. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, he was deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and assigned to a Marine Wing Support Squadron, where he participated in both air and ground combat operations in support
of coalition forces.
His military decorations include the Kuwait Liberation Medal,
Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with two stars, Navy Unit Commendation, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He was also recognized with a Meritorious Mast and qualified as an expert with both the rifle and pistol.
Building on the discipline and experience gained during his military
service, Chief Mickle went on to a distinguished career in federal law enforcement, serving as a Special Agent with the U.S. Departments of Justice and Treasury, and later in leadership roles with U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement. He now serves as Chief of Police in Surfside Beach, South Carolina.
His career reflects a lifelong commitment to service, leadership,
and dedication to his country and community.

Reminder: Ocean Boulevard will be closed today from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the Golf Cart Parade.

As we wrap up National Police Week, members of the Surfside Beach Police Department were honored to stand alongside representatives from law enforcement agencies across Horry County at the Fallen Officer’s Memorial held today in Conway, South Carolina.

The memorial ceremony served as a solemn reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and dedication displayed by the officers who gave their lives in service to their communities. Together, we paused to remember and honor those heroes whose End of Watch will never be forgotten.

National Police Week is a time for agencies across the country to recognize the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers, support the families of the fallen, and strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the communities we serve. Events throughout the week pay tribute not only to those we have lost, but also to the officers who continue answering the call every day.

We are grateful to stand united with our fellow Horry County law enforcement agencies in honoring these fallen officers and their families.

Most importantly, thank you to our community for your continued support, encouragement, and partnership. Your kindness and appreciation mean more than words can express to the officers who proudly serve Surfside Beach every day.

Please join us in congratulating Surfside Beach Police Sgt. Brode on graduating from the Law Enforcement Education and Development (LEED) Program at Coastal Carolina University.

The 9-month professional certificate program, developed through a partnership between Coastal Carolina University and the Myrtle Beach Police Department, combines academic instruction with real-world leadership experience to help prepare current law enforcement officers for advancement, leadership roles, and enhanced community service.

At the Surfside Beach Police Department, we prioritize leadership, succession planning, and employee development to help ensure long-term continuity within our organization and the highest level of service to our community. We firmly believe that investing in our workforce today pays dividends for years to come.

We would also like to thank the Myrtle Beach Police Department and Coastal Carolina University for sponsoring this outstanding program and allowing Surfside Beach Police to be a part of it.

Please join us in congratulating Cpl. Korman and law enforcement officers from across South Carolina who were recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for their outstanding efforts in DUI enforcement.

Awards were presented to both teams and individual officers who have gone above and beyond to detect and remove impaired drivers from our roadways. Cpl. Korman was nominated for DUI Enforcement Hero of the Year, a reflection of his hard work, dedication, and commitment to keeping our community safe.

While South Carolina tragically led the nation in 2024 for drunk driving deaths per capita, with 417 lives lost, we are encouraged to see the tide turning. Thanks to the relentless enforcement efforts of officers like Cpl. Korman in 2025, the state has experienced a significant decline in roadway fatalities helping prevent senseless tragedies and protect the public.

We are incredibly proud of Cpl. Korman and all those recognized for their life-saving work. His dedication plays a vital role in making our family beach a safer place for everyone.

We are also grateful to Mothers Against Drunk Driving for working tirelessly to prevent impaired driving and for their continued support of the officers and agencies committed to this mission.
