The Whitefish Lake community recently turned out at the boat launch for an advanced training on the science and prevention of invasive Spiny Waterfleas and other Aquatic Invasive Species provided by the Douglas County Surface Waters Program. The fascinating science behind invasive species like Spiny Waterflea and Curlyleaf Pondweed was discussed, and participants were trained to share this knowledge effectively with the boating public. Thank you to the Whitefish Lake Clean Boats Clean Waters crew and Whitefish Lake Conservation Organization for your amazing work preventing the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species and keeping our Douglas County Lakes and rivers healthy!

A great opportunity to get to know one of the 19 State Natural Areas in Douglas County!

If you like the look of these shooting stars, you might be just the star we’re looking for to join our State Natural Areas (SNA) Volunteer Program!

Shooting stars are native spring flowers that grow in open areas throughout southern Wisconsin. They rely on bumble bees for what’s known as “buzz pollination," where bumblebees vibrate their bodies to shake the pollen out of flowers.

Volunteering at a state natural area can help keep a habitat healthy for flowers, bees and the many other species that call those places home.

Learn more, get involved, and sign up for email invites in your region at our SNA Volunteer webpage: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/StateNaturalAreas/volunteer
