Better City Superior

Better City Superior Better City Superior is a 501c6 created to help move business forward and grow our community. The appeal of our city is easy to understand.

It's located on the shores of Lake Superior, with countless recreational venues, including year-round sporting events, breathtaking scenery and home to the University of Wisconsin. However, issues such as empty storefronts, the lack of housing and lower job development and retention have highlighted the importance of bringing a professional team into our city to address the diverse needs of our changing community.

Better City Superior achieved a major milestone with a Superior Exposition District being included in the Governor's 2021-2023 biannual budget. This was the closest we have been to our goal in the last nine years. Unfortunately, the legislature vetoed the entire budget, for many reasons, and with it...

On March 11, the state Senate Committee on Economic Development, Commerce and Trade unanimously passed SB 157 after testimony from Better City Superior supporters. This is exciting news for the Exposition District efforts! We are hopeful the bill will make it onto the schedule for a full Senate vote before the session closes on March 24. Stay tuned for more details.

Our progress continues! On October 30th, Assembly Bill 167 successfully passed through the Ways and Means Committee with an 8-2 vote!

Next steps are for AB 167 to receive a full Assembly vote – we continue to work on securing support for this vote – and a hearing for the companion Senate Bill 157, which is being worked on for November or early December.

It’s been six years from initial planning and concept to the doorstep of permission to create a Superior Exposition District and unlocking this very unique economic development tool for Superior. We are thankful for the continued community support this initiative has received. We wouldn’t be where we are without it!

Steps forward continue! On Sept. 26, a contingent of community representatives traveled to the state capitol to testify in favor of Assembly Bill 167 during a public hearing of Assembly Committee on Ways and Means. The testimony was strong and lasted 90 minutes. The committee was very complimentary of the effort to create local solutions to grow our economy without impacting statewide taxpayers.

A hearing on companion Senate Bill 157 is being scheduled in the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Commerce and Trade sometime in October.

You can read more about these two bipartisan bills currently in the state Senate and Assembly. http://bettercitysuperior.org/projectupdate.html

Another successful Superior Days is in the books! We are fortunate to have so many invested community advocates, including our youth, promoting Superior and the northwest Wisconsin region at the capitol. We have updates on LRB 0808 and other positive developments related to the exposition district on our website.

We're happy to have renewed legislative support from Sen. Janet Bewley, D-Mason, and Rep. Nick Milroy, D-South Range. They have begun circulating a co-sponsorship memo, LRB 0808, for standalone legislation to allow Better City Superior to work with the City Council to create an exposition district in Superior. This could be the year Superior finally gets permission to determine its own success. Even before delegates headed to Madison this week to lobby for the creation of an exposition district, local legislators were circulating a bill, seeking sponsorship, that would allow the City Council to utilize to...
