I’ve had several people ask me about the certification and requirements to serve as a Justice of the Peace here in Montana, so I wanted to share the facts!
A Justice of the Peace does NOT have to have a law degree or be an attorney. Montana’s courts of limited jurisdiction have specific training and certification requirements for judges, including Justices of the Peace.
If I am elected Justice of the Peace, I will be required to attend the Court of Limited Jurisdiction training and certification program following the election. This is the same required training that current Justices of the Peace must complete. I will also be required to pass the certification examination before I can fully perform the functions of the office.
So, no — the county isn’t taking on an additional training cost simply because I am new to the position. The certification and continuing education requirements are part of the established process for Montana Justices of the Peace.
In addition to this required judicial training, I have a degree in Political Science, where I studied the U.S. Constitution, government, and our legal and political systems. I know there is still a great deal for me to learn, and I look forward to that opportunity.
If elected, I will take the responsibility of this office very seriously. I will work hard to understand and follow Montana law, listen carefully to the facts presented in court, and make decisions based on the law and the facts — while maintaining a strong code of ethics and treating every person who comes before the court with fairness and respect.
